Will bringing the Commanders back to RFK Stadium reignite the team's glory days?

A new era dawned on the Washington Commanders in August 2020 when Jason Wright joined the franchise as the first black President of a team in the league’s history. Sadly, that era is about to come to an end as the former NFL running back decided that he will part ways from the franchise after this season.

Now acting as a de facto President throughout the 2024 season, Wright has stepped down from his presidential responsibilities and will focus on being the senior adviser to the team. For the time being, his agenda includes finding a new home for the Washington Commanders and a new stadium naming rights partner. The Washington Post broke out the news initially, but Ian Rapoport has more to say.

“Basically, Jason Wright was the last big-time piece of the former era. And look, we’ve spent a lot of time, a lot of hours, a lot of days and weeks and months talking about all the issues with the Daniel Snyder regime in Washington. There were many, many, many. This is basically the last piece of it,” said Rapoport.

He further added, “And Josh Harris and all of his people that he brought in from coach, general manager, and Adam Peters, now a new quarterback, team president, was really the last big thing.” As explained by Rapoport, this is the final piece of the puzzle that needed to be changed before the Washington Commanders could move forward with the complete facelift of their franchise.

As reported by Washington Post, Wright informed the business staff of his impending exit on Thursday afternoon, but if things work out in his favor and he happens to find a job before the end of the 2024 season, the Commanders will expedite his exit from the organization. For now, Josh Harris and Tad Brown of the Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment will lead the search for a new President.

But before Jason Wright actually exits the organization, there’s one order of business that he needs to take care of. And that is, finding a new stadium site for the Washington Commanders.

Jason Wright will see things through for the Washington Commanders

In a detailed interview with The Athletic, Wright laid out his next plans for the franchise before he finally bids adieu to the Washington team. But there’s one thing that sticks out the most as far as his tenure with the Commanders is concerned.

“Given all those accomplishments, that’s why I am proud to announce that I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal,” told Wright to The Athletic.

As it happens, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has a penchant for bringing the Commanders franchise back to DC after the football team ditched the RFK Memorial Stadium back in 1996 and left for Maryland. The RFK Memorial Stadium has already been approved for demolition, but the bipartisan group wants to revitalize the dormant stadium with the “D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act.”

But it seems like Josh Harris, Magic Johnson and the other Commanders stakeholders have an ace in the hole that might do the trick of facilitating the Commanders cascade back to its roots.

“The legislation, driven in part by D.C.’s delegate to the House Eleanor Norton, passed the House in February. The Washington Commanders have hired Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck to lobby on the bill, per a new filing under the Lobbying Disclosure Act published this week,” said a column by Politico.

For now, the first order of business for Jason Wright might be to get in touch with the lawmakers to figure out how they are going to carry out the plan of moving the Commanders to DC. The RFK Stadium hasn’t been used in the last 5 years and is on the cusp of falling apart. It was supposed to be demolished by the end of 2023, but that didn’t happen. Surprisingly, the last seat from the RFK Stadium is still up for grabs on the internet.
