It seems like Jason Kelce has time-traveled and returned to the 2023 start. Since the Philadelphia Eagles’ disappointing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wildcard, Kelce has been in the news because of his retirement talk, much similar to last year after his Super Bowl loss. He looked emotional at the end of the defeat to Bucs and appeared to draw the curtain on his 13-year NFL career. But the recent rumors surrounding Eagles and brother Travis Kelce‘s words have instilled hope in his fans of
Earlier after the season-ending loss, the Eagles’ All-Pro reportedly told his team in the locker room that he might be retiring soon. This brought turbulence to the Eagles camp as well on social media. Later, on his New Heights podcast, Kelce mentioned that he hadn’t made anything official yet, and the incident in the locker room was due to an emotional shift. A new rumor now hints that the Super Bowl champ might return the next season amid a minor restructure in the contract.
As per the NFL rumors account on X, “The #Eagles did a minor restructure of Jason Kelce’s contract to open up $2.4M in cap room for 2024, per over the cap.” Interestingly, the Eagles restructured Jason’s contract in February 2023 as well, creating $2.4 million in the process. In the offseason last year, the team had to address several key matters in the salary caps, one of them being Jason Kelce’s impending free agency.

The Eagles center has a one-year contract with the team for $14,250,000, of which the entire amount is guaranteed. Now, the new $2.4 million cap room space in the restructured contract will enable the Eagles to keep Kelce on the roster until June 2024, giving him the option to move to the retired list if he decides to end his career this year. No official confirmation on this minor tweak has been made yet.
Even though the retirement rumors are taking the front space, his brother Travis Kelce, in a recent press conference, mentioned that Jason still has some game time left. This also brings back hope for the fans to see the center back in action for the Eagles once again.
Yet, the updated news also conveys that the Eagles are considering and respecting the future decision made by Jason, leaving everything to their star player. So, what will Jason Kelce decide next?
It all comes down to what Jason Kelce wants
Philadelphia Inquirer recently reported that if Jason Kelce retires, he would be one of the fortunate ones since he paved the way for an easy transition to his post-football life – something most NFL players don’t get to cherish. But if one holds on to Travis Kelce’s words, Jason Kelce can make a return.
A day ago, Travis Kelce appeared in a pregame press conference, where he was asked about the plans of Jason Kelce, amid his retirement rumors. The proud younger Kelce said, “It’s been cool to see everyone appreciate who he’s been over the years this past week. I think the big guy’s still got some football left if he wants it.”

Travis also mentioned that there were reports of him retiring, “but he didn’t really say any of that.” Jason, for his part, cleared the air on Wednesday, January 17, in his “New Heights” podcast. He said, “I didn’t announce what I was doing on purpose….I just don’t think you’re in the position after a game like that to really make that decision, I just don’t. There’s too much emotion in the moment, there’s too much going down in the moment to really fully grasp that decision.”

Therefore, Kelce mentioned that whenever he makes such a decision in the future, he will make sure it is decisive and respectful towards everyone. But again, Jason Kelce’s tearful conversation with his teammates speaks otherwise. Is he retiring? only time will tell. Until then, Kelce wants his team to cherish the time they got together!
