Who’s the top QB in this NFL season? Well, there are few contenders, but you’re probably thinking of the Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. Why not? The guy’s led the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowls, has a couple of MVP honors, and boasts one of the highest contracts in American sports history. But here’s the twist — Detroit Lions‘ QB Jared Goff is actually making more money than Mahomes, despite Goff not having the same resume.
Earlier this year, the Lions and Goff put pen to paper on agreeing to a four-year extension of the star quarterback worth $212 million. That’s right, Goff’s locked in with the Lions through 2027—no surprises there. With a $212 million extension, Goff’s got $170 million guaranteed, making about $53 million a year—good enough for sixth on the list of the NFL’s highest earners.
At present, he’s only behind the Cowboys‘ Dak Prescott ($60 million), Packers‘ Jordan Love ($55 million), Jaguars‘ Trevor Lawrence ($55 million), Bengals‘ Joe Burrow ($55 million), and the Dolphins‘ Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million). With his performance for the Lions’, this extension was on the cards for quite some time.

He got his name in the top four for both passing yards and passing touchdowns of 4,575 and 30, respectively. Goff, who’s already sitting on a $100M net worth, definitely earned his reward with that kind of performance. And he’s still keeping that same level of play this season, proving last year wasn’t a fluke.
So far this season, Goff’s thrown for 2,761 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 9 picks. His passing accuracy is on point too, with a solid 74.9% completion rate. So, it would not be wrong to include Goff’s name in the top QBs of this season along with the likes of Mahomes.

When the Chiefs locked Mahomes for that extravagant 10 years, $450 million deal in 2020, the record books were updated. But now, as we see in the same book, his name still sits at the top for the largest deal, though he’s been passed by several players when it comes to annual salary. And the Lions’ star QB is one such name.

With all the incentives, the extension is worth a whopping $503 million, which means Mahomes will be raking in about $52.7 million a year. Sure, it’s only a small difference when you compare it to Goff’s annual salary. But still, it’s crazy for the Chiefs’ fans to think that despite having one of the biggest contracts in sports, Mahomes is making less than other guys in the league.
However, that aside, there’s something these two QBs have in common this season. Both Jared Goff’s Lions and Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs are sitting pretty at 10-1, making them top Super Bowl contenders with the way they’ve been playing. Now, we’ll see how things play out when the Lions face off against the Bears today, and the Chiefs go up against the Raiders on Black Friday.
