Is Jacoby Brissett's benching a sign of the Patriots' desperation or a smart move for the future?

The HC Jerod Mayo made a mega switch after being dragged 1-4 in the regular season. The veteran was pushed to the backseat. Rookie got the baton in hand. With this mega change, a new era begins for the New England Patriots on Sunday’s Week 6 game against the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium. But the big question is, has the senior QB Jacoby Brissett accepted the crowning of Drake Maye as QB1? His sentiments are out in the open.

The media had no mercy for Grandpa. All blunt questions regarding the benching were asked of him. But he handled all of them with class. On losing the starting job, Jacoby Brissett said, “I’ve been through harder things in my life. I’m sure this won’t be the last time I go through something hard. So I’ll be all right.” Not only that. The crowned prince Maye tried to put ice on Brissett’s burns and he responded with some words of wisdom. “Drake asked how I’m doing. I’m like, ‘Man, if you’re worried about me, you’re worried about the wrong thing.” He spoke like a true leader.

It wasn’t a peachy start for Brissett in the season. Signed by the Patriots in March, Mayo named him the starting QB. In the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, the team won the game 16-10, but Brissett failed to make an impression. He completed 15 out of 24 passes and covered a meager 121 yards. Until Week 5, he covered 696 passing yards and managed only 2 TDs. The picture blurred for him with 17 sackings in five games. The Patriots lost 4 games after that. This failure opened the gates for the rookie QB, Drake Maye.

Will Maye’s magic work for the Patriots?

As per experts, starting Drake Maye is definitely the right call. The offense needs a spark, and with his athleticism and strong arm, he could really tap into the potential this unit has.

To unlock his true potential, it is vital to get him on the field, expressed HoF Troy Aikman on the podcast ‘Pardon My Take‘ on October 10. He said, “If I were the coach, I would simply ask the question- one, can we protect him and can we put him in an environment where we at least give him a chance where he has an opportunity to have success? And if the answer to those questions is a yes, then I say get him out there and let him get some reps.” After all, Drake Maye had just one outing so far in the season. And, he showed enough skills to take on the role of QB1.
