Is Drake Maye the next big thing in the NFL, surpassing even seasoned players like Brissett?

In the lively atmosphere of the Gillette stadium, debates about QBs have sparked a fire on the New England Patriots future. In a recent episode of NFL Live, host Laura Rutledge was joined by analysts Mina Kimes, Mike Tannenbaum, and Dan Orlovsky to share their views.

Jacoby Brissett praised Drake Maye, for his rapid development and potential. Brissett noted that Maye is “light years ahead of where he was when he first got here. “ He also added, “Maye came up to me and told me anything you need I’m here for you,” acknowledging his friendly behavior. The analysts further delved into this, with Dan Orlovsky and Mina Kimes emphasizing the importance of Maye’s growth under Brissett’s mentorship. Despite Maye’s impressive preseason performance, the Patriots opted for Brissett’s experience. “A healthy Drake Maye at the end of this year is job number one for the Patriots,” remarked one of the analyst.

Mina Kimes put up, “If Brissett struggles after a few week sand there’s pressure there’s calls coming to start Maye, a big part of why he will be struggle probably will be the offensive line, which was a big reason why you didn’t’ start Drake May in the first place.” She clearly highlighted the potential dangers of rushing a rookie quarterback into a tough situation. Especially when the offensive line isn’t that stable. The Pats’ decision to start Brissett might be a strategic move to protect Maye from developing bad habits early in his career. Analyst Tannenbaum supported this view, pointing out that history favors giving rookie quarterbacks time to develop. Lastly, the panel agreed that Brissett’s steady hand would provide stability while the team continues to rebuild.

Besides his thoughts on Maye, the 91st overall pick of 2016 showed gratitude for his chance to lead the Patriots. Brissett expressed his excitement, saying, “Worked hard to get to this point. Excited for this journey.” His humble approach and focus on team success set the tone for what promises to be a challenging season for the Patriots.

Nonetheless, the younger QB accepted his role as the Patriots’ backup quarterback with maturity. The 21-year-old QB said to a reporter, “I have no regrets, I left it all out there.” Evidently, he is eager to contribute to the team.

Brissett named starter but Maye is waiting in the wings

Head coach Jerod Mayo finally ended the suspense on Thursday, naming Jacoby Brissett as the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback. After weeks of speculation, Mayo made it official, acknowledging that while Brissett has been solid, he cannot deny that rookie Maye had “outplayed” the veteran during the preseason. “This is a true competition,” Mayo remarked, adding, “But we have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring.”

Meanwhile, Maye, although not disappointed, admitted that the competitive edge in him wants to play. “I understand the situation,” he said, acknowledging the 31-year-old’s awareness and his own role as the backup.

Is Drake Maye the next big thing in the NFL, surpassing even seasoned players like Brissett?

Have an interesting take?

Former Pats RB James White supports Mayo’s decision, noting that it’s “not always the most talented player” who wins the starting job. Despite Maye’s impressive preseason, which included a touchdown against the Eagles and solid performances, the Patriots are playing it safe. “The deck may have been stacked against Maye” given the O-line’s issues, Brissett is the safer choice for Week 1 against the Bengals.

The debate over who should start may continue, but for now, Brissett is QB1, with Maye one play away. As the Patriots gear up for their season opener, the focus shifts to whether Brissett can hold the reins or if Maye will soon get to be on the big stage.
