Purdy’s rise from being the ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ to being the starting QB in the Super Bowl, in just 2 years has been meteoric. However, he hasn’t won everybody over! Though the 34-year-old Newton changed his tone regarding Purdy, after his sensational performance against the Lions. He still has some qualms about the QB.

“I’ve never said that Brock Purdy was trash. What I did say, was that Brock Purdy is a game manager. That’s not hate, that’s just what I feel to be facts”, said Newton on his podcast. He then went on to explain his reasoning behind this statement.

“To be labeled a game changer, Brock Purdy has to be the best player on the offensive side of the ball. And that’s not the case”, said Newton. But he made a declaration regarding the 24-year-old that might make his HC Shanahan shiver. “Brock Purdy is the 10th-best player on this team”, exclaimed Newton. Can the 49ers take on the Chiefs if their key man is the tenth-best player in the squad? Especially when they will be facing a team they have lost to earlier.

A Super Bowl rematch is on the horizon

Four years ago, Shanahan’s 49ers lost the Super Bowl against the Chiefs. This time around, they are bolstered by exceptional additions such as Christian McCaffrey and Purdy. But if Newton’s assessment is correct, then this could be a tough outing as well.
