When a team loses a game, the quarterback is the one who takes all the blame. The same happened with Russell Wilson and the Broncos after CJ Stroud and the Texans ran laps around the Denver team. Things were pretty obvious afterward: Wilson might also have anticipated the slander coming.

Andrew Mason posted an audio excerpt of former offensive lineman Mark Schlereth speaking about Russell Wilson. The analysis was brash and the reporter from NFL on X didn’t miss an opportunity to say what he actually wanted to say about the Broncos’ QB1. Wilson has a lot of questions to answer, and this game put the Broncos in jeopardy, as we might not see them in the playoffs.

“I could get a quarterback from Smoky Hill High School to do what Russ does.” This is how the excerpt started. The analyst pauses to emphasize what he said about the QB. “It just was bad, it was awful,” added the analyst.

Schlereth points out how many times Russell Wilson ran into trouble and didn’t get out of it. Wilson allowed himself to be forced out of a play several times. He mentions how the Broncos QB1 barely managed to “scramble” some yards.

The problem, per the analyst, is that Wilson created trouble for himself in the first place, and when he got out of it, people started giving him flowers. According to him, Wilson was praised for five minutes of good play, and people completely disregarded the 55 minutes he completely botched. Schlereth said, “You’re the one who started the inferno… If you start the fire and you finally douse out the ashes, you’re not the hero for putting the fire out.”

Sometimes, the stats don’t tell the complete picture. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed. But this time, Russell Wilson looked terrible on paper and throughout the game.

Talking about what’s on the papers, Wilson only completed about 57.7% of his passes. Out of 26 attempts he made, he could only complete 15 of them. Moreover, he was sacked thrice and also intercepted three times. Even one interception or sack can cause heaps of problems at a crucial time. The game was pretty neck-to-neck till it wasn’t.

His counterpart, CJ Stroud, was sacked five times in this game and intercepted once, but still managed to take the W. That shows that the stats on the paper don’t tell the complete picture. Stroud still broke records as a rookie. He completed 59.3% of his passes.

So, what’s the problem here? Is Wilson not performing well? Or are the pieces around him not doing well? Is there some issue with the coaching? As of now, it can be anything. Do you think that the Broncos are in the playoffs picture?
