The San Francisco 49ers won the NFC title this time. However, the win wasn’t easy for the Niners, as there was a point during the game when the Detroit Lions were about to win the NFC. Regarding this, the 49ers’ prominent defensive lineman, Nick Bosa, confessed his fault.
San Francisco is heading toward their Super Bowl appearance to battle against the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. On the one hand, the Chiefs trounced the Ravens; the 49ers had a close game, almost losing their chance to win this time. Although the script changed in the second half for the Niners, the first half still can’t be forgotten, especially by Bosa.

In a post-game press conference of the 49ers, Nick Bosa appeared before the media to talk about his team’s latest win and admitted the failure of the Niners’ defense on Sunday. When asked about his feelings and embarrassment about what happened in the game regarding the team’s defense, Bosa said, “Yeah, it was embarrassing.” He continued confessing, “Kind of felt helpless, and we didn’t want to go down as failures, and we know our defense is way too good to play like that.“
The 49ers struggled in the first half against the Lions, trailing 24-7. The Lions had a solid offensive performance, gaining nearly 300 yards, especially on the ground. This led to a somber atmosphere in the 49ers locker room. Nevertheless, the team consciously chose not to let the first-half setback determine their season’s fate.
Given the circumstances, making a comeback in the second half seemed unlikely. However, the team’s confidence and halftime adjustments were crucial in turning the home team’s tide. This determination fueled a remarkable comeback, resulting in a 34-31 victory and earning them a spot in Super Bowl LVIII.
But what changed in the team’s play that helped them clinch the NFC title?
The 49ers changed their defensive strategy to play more man-to-man and focus on creating turnovers. Safety Tashaun Gipson made a crucial play in the third quarter, turning the game in their favor. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks credited the defensive line for their control and emphasized the impact of aggressive man-to-man play.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan stayed positive, stating the deficit was manageable, especially as they were set to start the second half with the ball, providing a chance for a quick comeback. Shanahan stressed aggressiveness for the second half. The 49ers were ready for the Lions’ risky fourth-down decisions, resulting in turnovers on downs and turning into touchdowns for the 49ers.
