Jets fans, how crucial is Schweitzer's presence for a Week One victory over the 49ers?

Last season’s runner-up, the San Francisco 49ers, are all set to begin their season against the New York Jets in a week 1 clash on Monday. Both teams had completely contrasting seasons last time out, as the 49ers lost in Super Bowl LVIII in overtime. While the Jets didn’t even make the playoffs, thereby extending their infamous record to 13 seasons.

However, going into their game against the 49ers, one of their key players is possibly ruled out from the encounter. Veteran offensive guard Wes Schweitzer has been placed in the injury reserves as the team travels for Levi’s Stadium. Earlier this week, Schweitzer ended up injuring his hand, which put him among the non-participants in Thursday’s training session.

But looking at Wes Schweitzer’s injury on the eve of the regular season, it is nothing new for the Jets. As the 30-year-old had an injury-prone start to his Jets chapter. Signing a two-year contract last season, the Jets offensive guard ended up making just six appearances, among which two were starting while others were back-ups at center and guard.

Although it is yet to be seen who will take the place of Schweitzer, early signs have indicated Xavier Newman. But speaking about absentees from the roster going into their season opener, head coach Robert Saleh stated, “We have a lot of options. Knock on wood. We’ve got plenty of guys who took a lot of reps last year, so I’ll keep that one until game day.” When it comes to options, the Jets have a few on their reserve list.

Jake Hanson, who joined last season from the Packers, could be in contention to start after his four starts at guard last year. But looking at the injury trouble, LB Zaire Barnerser is also out with an ankle injury. Elsewhere, WR Mike Williams, offensive tackle Tyron Smith and Max Mitchell are supposed to play their part in the regular-season opener after participating in full training over the week. While we have covered the Jets injury report, let’s have a glance at the 49ers roster.

San Francisco 49ers injury report before week 1 clash against the Jets

Based on the injury report released in the Bay area, the 49ers would be missing a few of their key players in their season opener. LB Dee Winters remained out of practice all week while trying to recover from his ankle injury. Elsewhere, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos would be out from the week 1 game, citing recovery from a knee injury he suffered during the preseason finale against the Raiders.

Even Leonard Floyd also got injured in the knee during the same play. Later on, it was found that Gross-Matos’s injury was more severe than Floyd’s. RB Christian McCaffrey, guard Aaron Banks, and Talanoa Hufanga remain doubtful against the Jets. All of them could find themselves in action only if their contribution is urgently needed.

Meanwhile, left tackle Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk, who are fresh off new contract extensions, are said to play a key role in the opening clash. But will the 49ers carry on their momentum from last season, which got them inches within the Super Bowl title? Or will the Jets get off to a strong start as Aaron Rodgers returns to action after last season’s absence?
