Can the 49ers afford to lose Trent Williams, or is he irreplaceable?

The San Francisco 49ers might have found their way to get their contract situations resolved. With Brandon Aiyuk signing an extension last week, he put an end to his contract speculation. This time, it was the turn of another Pro Bowler who had been holding out for his extension since the beginning of training camps.

As reported by Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Trent Williams has agreed to a contract extension, thereby ending his holdout before the regular season next week. Even Williams’ agency, Elite Loyalty Sports, has confirmed that the veteran offensive tackle is “headed to SF to finalize a new deal.”

Well, before official reports came out of Trent putting ink to paper, his brother had already teased us about his possible extension. In his recent Instagram stories, Williams was spotted boarding a late-night flight, possibly to sort out the final details. Fred Williams even put the caption, “Year 15, let’s get it! indicating the 49ers offensive tackle completing 15 years in the NFL.

But his journey to the table hasn’t been the smoothest of rides. As, the 36-year-old missed training camp and three preseason games while racking up $4 million in fines. Although Williams had signed a six-year contract back in 2021 worth $138.1 million, his $22 million and $32 million yearly salaries after the 2024 campaign weren’t guaranteed.

This prompted the three-time All-Pro to choose ‘hold-out’ in order to get his contract restructured. The Niners even kept Williams out of their 53-man roster because of him not reporting to the camp. But looking at his recent performances for the Niners, Williams’ demands weren’t surprising.

Have an interesting take?

Even as a 15-year vet playing in the NFL, Williams posted a 95.8% pass block win rate that was higher than anyone in the league last year. And that’s not the only positive, as the 11-time Pro Bowler helped the 49ers average 6.05 yards per carry with him on the field. Nonetheless, Williams’ contract wasn’t the only positive news that came out of the Bay Area last week. As wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk got his new deal to end his contract speculation.

Although Williams opted for the infamous strategy that most players choose when trying to get their contracts sorted. Aiyuk took a different route while choosing a ‘hold-in’ to avoid getting himself in the loop of fines that come through missing training camps. But the star receiver never participated in any practice drills often citing back injuries.

However, amid all the drama regarding his control, multiple teams enquired about the availability of Aiyuk, with the Steelers being the front-runners. Even HC Kyle Shanahan was tensed about the situation, citing, “There’s a scenario for anything, so I don’t want to rule anything out.” But contract negotiations suddenly took a dramatic turn, as GM John Lynch stated, “We were thrilled to draft Brandon in 2020 and are now equally excited to have him in the fold for years to come.”

Well, Aiyuk would surely be a force with the Niners after signing a four-year contract extension worth $120 million, thereby putting him among the top five highest-receivers in the league. With the 49ers wrapping up contract extensions for two of their priceless assets, they would be hoping to get one step better than their last season’s heartbreak in Super Bowl overtime against the Chiefs.
