Was Tyrel Dodson's hit on Skylar Thompson just part of the game, or did it cross the line?

In 2024, each game of the Miami Dolphins has been a talking point. Before the first game, Tyreek Hill‘s saga with police happened in front of teammates. In the second game, their main-string quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, suffered a concussion. It was an enormous blow. With 3rd concussion in the last 2 years, the QB is having a different fight. The Phins decided to move forward with their backup QB, Skylar Thompson. Now, he is on the brink of uncertainty.

During the game against the Seahawks, Thompson took a brutal hit from linebacker Tyrel Dodson in the 3rd quarter. After that 3rd down sack, he couldn’t move his right arm. While it looked like he might have injured himself, he returned to the field for the next play.

LB Dre’Mont Jones shoved him in the play. And he just laid on his back, visibly in pain. Later, he jogged to the sidelines and went straight to the locker room. The commentators informed everyone that the quarterback was experiencing difficulty in breathing with pain in the spine. Now, he has been ruled out of the game with a chest injury.

With Tagovailoa on the Injured Reserve (IR) list, the team has been in a fix. Tim Boyle has replaced Skylar Thompson in the game. In the 4th quarter, the Dolphins are trailing 17-3 and with a 0 wins 5 loss record in 5 games, he might not lead the turnaround. Their other QB, Tyler Huntley, might also get his chance soon.

While the injury happened out of the blue, fans don’t like the team’s choices in the quarterback department.

Fans roast Miami Dolphins after Skylar Thompson’s injury

During the off-season, the Dolphins didn’t work out their team. At least the fans think so. Tagovailoa has a history of frequent injuries. One fan brought attention to this fact and tweeted, “How you go into a season with Skylar Thompson as your only backup with an injury prone QB (Tua) is mind boggling.

Another fan was angry at the decision to include Skylar Thompson as backup QB and wrote, “I cannot put into words the amount of anger I have that knowing Tuas injury history, we chose Skylar Thompson to be our backup. It’s honestly a fireable decision. Just horrible.” Thompson has only played 7 games in his career so far and only played 2 games as the starting quarterback. But he wasn’t selected for the job based on results.

When Head Coach Mike McDaniel chose him as the starting QB, he said that he has a great bond with his teammates. He revealed that no one saw the hard work he has put into practice with his teammates, which has given confidence to both parties. However, today, when it mattered, the QB failed to take them to a victory.

Now, the coach has a bigger problem. This week, he has to find a replacement for Skylar Thompson. Who would it be, Boyle or Huntley? We’ll find out in a few days.
