Growing up on the small island of Kauai, Hawaii, the two Herbig brothers only had one dream together. From sharing bunk beds to spam sandwiches in a shared dorm room. Herbig boys had NFL aspirations running through their minds while they played for Kauai Bulldogs in Hawaii.
That was the last time Nick Herbig and Nate Herbig played together. Although Nick was in second grade while Nate was in sixth, they are yet again reunited in the NFL. After Nate signed with the Steelers last season, he only had one thing on his mind. And it came true when the Steelers decided to fulfil the Herbig boys’ lifetime wish.

If it isn’t obvious, then the answer is: Yes! Nick and Nate Herbig are brothers. Coming out of Wisconsin, Nick Herbig had the chance to reunite with his brother in Pittsburgh. Selected by the Steelers as their 132nd overall last season, Nate had a huge role to play in his brother’s journey to Pittsburgh. The moment the Steelers signed Nate as their free agent, Nick’s older brother had one wish. And that was to bring his brother along with him, “I came in the building screaming it. Like come, let’s get him here. Nick Herbig. STUD. Absolute STUD. I should be his agent.”
Well, Nick also had the same dream as his big brother, “We share the same dream. We work out together. We do everything together. Like, that’s my best friend. I don’t think blood can make us closer.” Even their mom, Robyn, expressed in an interview with Luke Gamble how amazing it was to witness them playing in the NFL together, “Of course, they talk about something that they dream of, but I think even more amazing is where we come from. It’s such a small island in the middle of the ocean, and here are two brothers who are not just playing in the NFL. But playing in the NFL together on the same team. It’s all just really like a dream.”

Their mom wasn’t the only parent who rejoiced in seeing her sons linking up together. Their dad, Bruce, called it indescribable, seeing them share the same field, “It’s indescribable. Really, I mean, I was lightheaded. I was yelling so much.” Although the Herbig household was happy to see their boys together in Pittsburgh. Their oldest son, Nate Herbig, suffered a huge setback just before the season got going in August.
What happened to the Steelers’ guard?
Poised to play his second season in black and gold, Nate Herbig ruptured his rotator cuff in training camp. This led to the offensive lineman being placed on the injury reserves, thereby ending his season prematurely.

After losing Herbig for the season, Mike Tomlin expressed his disappointment, “Man, attrition is a component of it. It sucks for Herbig.” Well, seeing Herbig get sidelined gave rookie center Zach Frazier an opportunity to start this season. “It’s unfortunate what happened to Nate. But I’ve been impressed with Zach’s maturity, whether it got expedited or whatever would’ve happened. The reality is Nate’s not in there, and Frazier’s got to get ready to go,” said Tomlin.
As Nate Herbig finds himself in recovery, we do hope he comes back sooner than expected. And starts linking up with his brother again, who has recorded 2.5 sacks over 5 games he has played this season.
