Is Luke McCaffrey set to outshine Christian in the NFL, or is it too early to tell?

Sibling sporting duos are always a hit with the public, doesn’t matter if they’re on different teams. Probably the biggest pair right now are the Kelce brothers – Travis and Jason, even though Jason’s retired already. That’ll be on account of their popular New Heights Podcast though. Maybe the McCaffrey brothers will have a shot at replicating that success soon.

Of course, the McCaffrey’s have more bench strength than the Kelces. Big brother Max McCaffrey played a couple seasons in the NFL before going into coaching, and Christian McCaffrey is as notable in his performance last year that won him the title of Best Offensive Player, as he is in his late entry into this season. He has honestly kind of overshadowed little brother Luke, who’s in his rookie season. But has Luke overshadowed Christian on the field?

Who is faster, Luke or Christian McCaffrey?

You’d expect Christian McCaffrey to be the faster of the two, right? Not only is he a running back, he was far and away the best one on the field last year. He ran more than 90 yards a game on average, for a total of 1459 in the regular season. And then there’s Luke, who started as a quarterback, then switched to wide receiver. Surprising as it is, Luke’s actually the faster brother. Not by much though, Luke McCaffrey’s got a 4.46s 40-yard dash, as opposed to Christian’s 4.48s.

Of course, there’s a chance the gap’s even larger now, after Christian McCaffrey got a procedure for his Achilles tendonitis. Luke, on the other hand, is as spry as ever at 23-years-old. He has an interesting college record, seeing as he switched not just colleges but positions too. As a quarterback, he was unimpressive, and only started in 5 games across the two teams (Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Rice Owls). As wide receiver, he flourished, and in his final year he had 992 yards in just 13 games.

That’s the kind of performance that draws attention, and that 40-yard sprint at the NFL Combine helped. In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders snapped up the young talent in the 3rd round, 100th pick overall. We know what you’re thinking, but no, the brothers won’t be playing against each other this season. Even with Christian back on the field, the San Francisco 49ers won’t be playing the Commanders this year.

What’s your perspective on:

What are Luke McCaffrey’s NFL stats?

Well, it’s only his rookie year, so you can be a bit forgiving of his numbers. The young man’s only had 4 starts so far, though he has appeared in all 10 Commanders games. Across that time, he has made 13 receptions for 134 yards. He has, however, only been targeted for 16 passes, meaning he’s missed only 3. His stats are a bit hamstrung by him not being a starter, but he’s growing into his role with the Commanders.

Besides, he’s on a 4-year contract, he has plenty of time to develop as a player. In that time, there’s even a chance he’ll run into his big bro on the field. Both brothers have a future in the NFL, and Christian has been supportive of Luke’s career too. Ahead of the sprint at the NFL Combine where Luke outdid Christian, the latter tweeted “Have a day!!” There’s clearly love and support in the McCaffrey family, we look forward to seeing how things progress for them.
