Did KaVontae Turpin just save the Cowboys' season with his electrifying 99-yard kick return?

With calls of tanking and whatnot, the Dallas Cowboys have pulled off a sensational victory in Washington, DC. Taking on their divisional rivals’ Commanders, the Cowboys didn’t have much of a chance, considering the injuries they were dealing with. However, they somehow scored 24 points in the final quarter to win by 34-26. Well, thanks to their kick returner, KaVontae Turpin, whose 99-yard kick return TD helped them grab a 10-point lead with just 3 minutes left on the clock.

Although the third-year receiver had a great day on the field with four kick returns for 179 yards, he didn’t always had it smooth. After getting kicked off from TCU because of an assault case in New Mexico. Turpin went on to plead guilty to assaulting his girlfriend while he was still playing for the Texas Christian University. But he got a shot at redemption after choosing to attend an abuse intervention program. This led to him clearing the conviction from his record while getting picked by the Cowboys in 2022.

Attending his first training camp in Dallas, Turpin shared his thoughts about the incident that changed his life, “I learned I got to learn from my accountability, my consequences. I’m just looking forward to becoming a greater man now.” When all hope seemed lost, the Cowboys did give Turpin one final chance to showcase his quality. As their special teams coach, John Fassel showered praise on Turpin, “He’s been on my radar since 2018. Clearly at TCU, I’ve watched every single one of his returns and then keeping an eye on him over the course of his fan league and Spring League and then USFL. I’ve seen all of that work.”

Seeing Turpin get that TD return that helped the Cowboys seal their 4th win of the season must have surely made Fassel proud. But it hasn’t always been doom and gloom for the Cowboys WR. Just last season, he was presented with some good news in his life.

KaVontae Turpin’s life changed after second daughter

Back in 2023, the Cowboys were preparing through training camps. However, KaVontae Turpin wasn’t able to partake because of duties elsewhere. He and his wife were busy welcoming their second child, daughter Kaori.

This changed his life. He said after returning to the camp, “Right now, it’s just a wonderful feeling. I brought my baby girl a couple of days ago. It helped because of a new man. Come out here, and now I’m just happy to be back out here with my team. Come out here and learn with these guys, with this team. I’m just in a wonderful spot right now.”

Well, it would indeed be a special moment for anyone like Turpin to embrace fatherhood for the second time, with him trying to make a name for himself in Dallas. Turpin’s kick returns and the Cowboys’ resilience to fight through adversity would be playing a massive role in their success moving forward. And with his daughter growing up, Turpin should start hitting the ground running. Although the Cowboys are still willing to fight on, it might be too late for them to do anything this season.
