Born and raised in Katy, Texas, Jalen Milroe takes deep pride in his African American heritage. His father, Quentin, served as a Marine, and his mother, Lola, built her career in the Navy. Their dedication to service and hard work became the foundation of his drive, both on and off the field.

While the specifics of his African ancestry aren’t widely documented, Milroe’s impact as a Black quarterback at Alabama is undeniable. The position has long been dominated by white players. While the black quarterbacks have often faced unfair scrutiny, their leadership and decision-making are constantly questioned. But Milroe refuses to be defined by outdated narratives. Instead, he’s rewriting them.

For young Black athletes who dream of leading at the highest levels, Milroe’s journey is proof that barriers exist to be shattered.

He often quotes scripture to direct his thinking, drawing often from Proverbs 3:5—“Do not lean on your understanding, lean on the Lord through it all.” This faith has been his guiding principle, whether he’s directing Alabama to triumph or fighting through the darkest moments of his career. Having gone through early setbacks in the 2023 season and an underwhelming loss to Texas, Jalen Milroe found himself at a juncture. Most players would have broken under the pressure, but Milroe clung to his religious beliefs instead. As questions about his leadership and passing skills grew, he stood firm, believing that God had ordained his journey. “God makes no mistakes. The biggest thing for me is to follow through with God’s plan and lean on Him, not my own understanding”, he stated.

He has also highlighted that his religion reminds him of his calling outside the game, stating, “I get my strength from my Lord and Savior. I honestly say that, and I surrender my throne to Him, and I know that I can lean on Him no matter the circumstance. I honestly say I put my trust in Him no matter what”. Milroe said after Alabama’s 24-10 win over Ole Miss on September 23, 2023. Milroe openly credits God for shaping him through difficult times, affirming that his identity rests on something greater than football.
