Pacific Islanders are famous for their massive frames and athletic prowess. Their heritage makes them perfectly suited to excel in the NFL, heavy and fast vectors on the field. Their distinctive names stand out too, of course. Houston Texans linebacker Henry To’To’o is just such a character.
Standing at 6’1″ and 227lb, he’s not too out of place in an NFL lineup. But he’s been effective as a linebacker for the Texans, recording 61 total tackles and a forced fumble across his rookie season. A name like that’s bound to make you curious about his heritage.

In one sense, Henry To’oTo’o is a California boy. He was born in Sacramento, California in 2001, to parents Rima and Iese To’oTo’o. It was a packed family, Henry’s just one of 7 siblings, and he grew up playing football with his siblings. But he is of course of Polynesian descent. Henry To’oTo’o is half Samoan and half Tongan.

Henry played college football for both Tennessee and Alabama, and excelled to the point the Texans drafted him in the 5th round in 2023. Maybe his Samoan heritage had a role to play in that. Samoan players are actually statistically overrepresented in the NFL, being 56% more likely to make it professional than any other ethnicity.

Can Henry To'oTo'o's blend of Cali roots and Polynesian strength redefine the linebacker role?

What religion does the Texans’ LB follow?
Barring everything about the Fa’a Samoa, you’ve got to remember that Henry To’oTo’o is still a California boy. He was raised in the Christian faith, and interestingly, football had a role to play in that too. “We used football as a tool to not only strengthen him as a man but his faith,” said his father, Iese.

Every step of the way, Henry’s dad credits their faith, “We are faithful people. Not only to the Lord, but to your family as well. Loyalty is a big thing in our culture, and he would not have made it this far without the love of God and his family.”
Christianity was first introduced to Samoa in 1830. Even though a smaller portion of islanders still hold on to traditional beliefs, but on the island of Samoa, Christ is king. It’s clear Henry himself feels he owes a lot to his faith, after all as per Henry “Faith, family, and football, that’s what we believe in.“
