Bill Belichick is arguably the best head coach of all time. Though, after a four-year drought of not even making it to the playoffs, have times changed for the 71-year-old? After yesterday’s loss to the Washington Commanders, the New England Patriots are now at 2-7 in the season. They’re the worst-performing team in the AFC currently. And agreed, that not a lot of the Patriots’ woes can be laid on Belichick’s shoulder, but as the GM and HC, he sure has a huge part to play.
Yet, coach Belichick remains resilient even during the testing times. He has shown no signs of wanting to leave coaching or football just yet. So, maybe a switch of teams is what is required to restore him to his former glory? And if Belichick leaves the Pats, who will be brave enough to even attempt to fill in his gigantic shoes?

@TwinsRandom took to X to share an interesting table of stats hosting NFL star QB Tom Brady and coach of his former side, Bill Belichick. It outlines how many games the Pats have won under the HC, with and without Tom Brady. It also states the number of Super Bowl wins, in both cases.
Numbers don’t lie and they make a clear point for what the user is advocating, “Bill Belichick would’ve been nothing but an average/below average grumpy old HC in the NFL if it wasn’t for TB12.” It’s hard to believe that the 2-7 Patriots are the same team that has the highest number of Super Bowl wins at 6 (along with the Pittsburgh Steelers).
All the Pats’ Super Bowl wins have been won during the Brady-Belichick tenure. They also recorded 9 AFC Championship wins. However, then Tom Brady announced his retirement. And then he though the footballer did make a comeback to the field again, winning another Super Bowl, it was for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this time.

It’s easy to see why people would blame Belichick for the state that his team is in. All the players on the roster and the play-calls on the field have Bill’s fingerprints on them. And after not making it to the playoffs or winning even the AFC Championships ever since Brady left, they blamed him for it. Can the Pats be rescued now? Maybe. But it won’t be under Bill Belichick as the expectations state.
Analyst says that Belichick must go
@DaveyRobicheaux tweeted on X, that Mike Vrabel, the HC of the Tennessee Titans, should be Belichick’s successor. And indeed, his record has been great, despite the circumstances he is in. “He is 51-38 with the Titans, with awful quarterbacks.” Dave hints that with Mac Jones leading the Patriots, Vrabel might just be the fix they need. So, what about Bill Belichick?
Mike Vrabel being the next head coach of the New England Patriots makes a lot of sense and has merit. He is a good coach who needs a new change of scenery. It’s played out in Tennessee. He is 51-38 with the Titans, with awful quarterbacks. Perfect successor to Bill Belichick. pic.twitter.com/n45v60nVuV

Mike Giardi, a Patriots insider for 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, said that the Commanders, whom the Pats lost to last night, could be his next destination. “Bill Belichick still wants to coach,” Giardi said. “I think I don’t think he’ll want to go out this way. I think you’ll want to coach. Like I said, I don’t think I don’t think you’d get much for him in a trade. But there are teams. Sure. I think the Commanders would be a team.”

Ron Rivera who currently guides the Commanders has a record of 0.444 this season. He is under contract through the 2024 season, but owner Josh Harris might not be too much against the prospect of having the greatest coach in football lead his team. Only time will tell if Bill will don the Commanders’ hat or stick with the Pats.
