Russell Wilson, the man who’s danced on two of sports’ grandest stages, is about to make some noise with the Pittsburgh Steelers as their new QB. Now, as the new season NFL season is on the horizon, Russ drew parallels between his new employers with his former MLB employers New York  Yankees. His take? It’s like comparing a fastball to a Hail Mary.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Russell Wilson's Steelers-inspired strategy really lead the Broncos to Super Bowl glory?

Have an interesting take?

On the morning of July 24th, the Steelers camp kicked off at Saint Vincent College. But it was the newcomer to the roster who was turning the media eyes on his first day. Their new starter QB Russell Wilson rolled into training camp in his sleek-looking Mercedes SUV, instantly drawing a swarm of media attention. Bringing the style since Questions flew about his first day and how he was feeling. Wilson’s response? Ready to get straight into the action. You could tell the 35-year-old can’t wait to celebrate touchdowns in Pittsburgh!

When asked about his new franchise, Wilson was quick to draw parallels between the Steelers and the Yankees. To him, it’s like comparing a home run to a touchdown – both teams are all about that championship mindset. “When I was with the Yankees, spring training and being around those guys, it was an organizational thing, the championships, the mentality. I believe the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s an organizational thing, the character of the men that we have,” he said.

Russell Wilson’s cross-sports playbook reads like a two-minute drill with a twist. His relationship with MLB has been no short of a love-and-hate one. Drafted by the Rockies in 2010, he told them he wanted to chase touchdowns over home runs. But Wilson couldn’t resist the dream call of the diamond. He picked up the baseball bat in 2018 with the $7.5 billion Yankees, his childhood heroes. But it was a short-lived dream, as he got struck out by Max Fried. All-in-all Wilson suited up for 93 MLB games, clocking a .229 average with five homers and 26 RBIs. Not exactly a home run king, but he sure made an impact at the plate!

Fast forward to 2024, during his offseason with the Steelers, Wilson took some batting practice with the Pirates and treated his teammates to a ballpark night. It’s a double play of passion for a guy who knows how to hustle both on the gridiron and the diamond.

But in all truth, there are actually more similarities between the Yankees and Steelers, than just about the mentality.

You might be thinking, ‘What a weird analogy to compare the Yankees to the Steelers’! But hold on. There’s a reason Russell Wilson chose this parallel.

Both franchises are historic powerhouses, stacked with trophies and legendary players. The Yankees’ Steinbrenner and the Steelers’ Rooney are iconic owners who have built a culture of professionalism and success. But recently, both teams have been stuck in a fourth-quarter struggle.

Despite their storied success, the Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009. The Steelers last showed their mettle when they hoisted the Lombardi in 2008. Missing the playoffs last season, both need a Hail Mary to bounce back.
