It’s hard to get to the bottom of what’s wrong with the New York Giants. Yes, Daniel Jones was not perfect, but the Giants’ management should also get their fair share of flak. Choosing Tommy DeVito over Drew Lock might not have been the right choice. The Giants have slipped to 2-9 and there’s no way they’ll make it to the playoffs.
Despite the Giants’ current struggles, the idea of tanking to get a top pick in 2025 is gaining traction among fans, but head coach Brian Daboll has made it clear he’s not going to accept a losing mentality. Tom Pelissero gave us an idea of what’s going on inside the head coach’s mind. Per the NFL Insider, Daboll doesn’t want to make it look like his team has given up on the season.
The NFL Insider and Rich Eisen sat together, and the host of the show started talking about John Mara and his squad being “toxic” to the Giants’ fans. Many thought that the New York team was doing a “house clean” and Daniel Jones was the start of it. But after watching the game in Munich unfold, Eisen got the sense that housecleaning was not the ownership’s agenda.

Daboll’s reasoning for letting DeVito take over was that he thought the QB would provide a “spark” to the offense. However, it’s too early to judge right now. Regardless, as said before, the franchise fans don’t want a “spark,” they want the No. 1 pick. Here’s what Pelissero had to say about that.
“When you hear Brian Daboll talking last week about, ‘Hey we’re looking for a spark with Tommy DeVito,’ I’m sure that there’s the tank heads out there who are going, ‘Why do you want a spark? Go to the bottom. You’d have the number one pick if this thing ended today.’ But you’re sitting there thinking, ‘We got to show that we’ve got some progress. We got to show that we got some positive momentum,’” Pelissero said on The Rich Eisen Show.
Regardless of what John Mara, Brian Daboll, or Tom Pelissero say, drafting a QB should be a priority for the Giants. They have some good pieces like Malik Nabers and Dexter Lawrence on the roster. But, they also happen to think that the Giants are a “soft team.” On that note, let’s talk about Tommy DeVito.
Is Tommy DeVito the quarterback for the future?

Around November 18, Jones was demoted to a third-string quarterback, and they had him taking scout safety reps. Seems like it was just yesterday. It happened after the team slipped to 2-8 and Daboll decided to have a chat with Daniel Jones, and you know what that means. It wasn’t long before Jones asked to get cut. Daboll said he had a lot of “respect” for Jones, but his 24-44-1 record with the team didn’t inspire confidence in the HC. Enter Tommy DeVito!
“After evaluating a bunch of things and looking at a lot of tape and being around Tommy last year where he created a little bit of a spark for us, that’s the reason why we’re going with Tommy,” Daboll said. After a 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and getting trolled by Baker Mayfield, DeVito came out with 189 yards, no touchdowns, and a 67.7% pass completion rate. Clearly, that wasn’t enough.

However, the new starting QB for the Giants is listed as questionable to play the TNF game against their divisional rivals, Dallas Cowboys. If anything, what DeVito brought to the table was just a spark: very short-lived. The Giants need a whole wildfire at this point. But it’s still worth waiting to see whether Brian Daboll’s words manifest themselves into reality.
