Is Tavia Hunt right to praise Tyson's courage, or should legends know when to hang up gloves?

There’s a lot of things you could accuse Clark Hunt‘s wife Tavia of, but timidity isn’t one of them. She’s outspoken not just about her political beliefs but about her lifestyle and her ideals. She’s weighed in on everything from the presidential election to hurricane relief to beauty standards. And after the latest hot-ticket boxing match between the legendary Mike Tyson and YouTuber turned exhibition boxer Jake Paul, she’s got something to say about the public’s reaction.

On her Instagram story, she posted a picture of Tyson in the ring with the caption, “Everybody talking about how sad it was to see Tyson not be who he once was. Who cares? He tried. What’s he supposed to do? Sit in a retirement home till he dies? I hope that when I’m his age I’m still taking risks and putting my life on the line for my calling to the Kingdom of Jesus. I hope I have enough courage to look like a fool for what I love. Jesus.

As a woman in her 50s herself, it’s clear she admires 58-year-old Tyson for the fight he’s shown. He had a history of drug abuse that pushed him to retire in his 30s with his health flagging. Tyson acknowledged he was in a bad place, and he crawled his way out of it. When he was in the middle of training for the Jake Paul fight, there were further complications too. The fight had originally been scheduled for July of this year, but Tyson had had to be hospitalized. To recover from that and still make the fight that very year is doubly impressive. They didn’t call him Iron Mike for nothing.

How did the match go? Does it matter? After what he came back from, just the fact that he fought was plenty. Yes, it was a unanimous ruling by the judges that Paul was the winner, but Tyson got a couple good hits in. And he lasted a whole 8 rounds with a man less than half his age. And to somewhat sweeten the taste of defeat, he walks away from the fight with a $20 million purse. There’s definitely worse ways to lose.

How did Mike Tyson react to his defeat?

The champ has cooled down a lot since back in the day. He will always be a legend as the world heavyweight champion, but you could hardly call him stable. The Holyfield-Tyson match in 1997 is all the proof you need of that. It’s not everyday you see teeth come into play in a boxing match. If that’s how you know Mike Tyson reacts when he’s losing a fight, you wouldn’t want to find yourself in Jake Paul’s shoes.

Have an interesting take?

But there was nothing even remotely like that in the ring. Tyson was practically passive compared to his usual self, and fought with restraint. In an X post after the fight, Tyson reminisced about his hospital stay earlier this year and how he’d almost died. He was dignified in defeat, and said he was grateful for the way things went. It’s likely there’s a little crossover between his mindset and Tavia Hunt’s. No way does a man like that decide he’ll be happy idling his days away. Sure, $20 million’s nice, but he had his time in the spotlight again, felt the rush of the ring, and had a massive crowd shouting his name in Dallas. This is where Iron Mike belongs.
