A season-ending loss, 48-32, for the Cowboys left them embarrassed on January 14. Their defense, which was led by Dan Quinn, experienced a meltdown. The fact that they allowed the Packers to reach the end zone every time, except for one drive, shocked people. And this couldn’t have come at a worse time. It was the Cowboys’s first home game in close to two full seasons. No doubt, Cowboys legend Michael Irvin lost his cool with Dak Prescott and the team in an interview on July 22.

Michael Irvin, the Hall of Fame wide receiver who helped define Dallas’ 1990s dynasty, didn’t just criticize his former team – he put them on blast with the intensity of a Roger Staubach fourth-quarter comeback. “I was fired also … Every team defended their home turf. They defended their stadium. They defended their city and their fanbase. Except the Dallas Cowboys.”

He isn’t wrong here. With that loss, they were the only team to lose twice in three seasons in the Wild Card Round. But against the Packers, they didn’t just experience defeat, they were completely outclassed.

Want to know what’s worse? Here you go:

  • The Cowboys were the first team to lose a #7 seed. It was a historical loss.
  • They were also the first to win 12 or more games in three back-to-back seasons. But never appeared in a conference championship game.

Irvin loved what the Packers did instead. “Listen, I like what Green Bay is doing. I kept telling people, ‘This young man, Jordan Love, is going to be a great player’ and he is doing great things for Green Bay. But no way the Dallas Cowboys could have lost that game. No way after the game do I want to hear you players saying they were burnt out.”

The Packers quarterback Jordan Love carved up the Dallas defense like a Thanksgiving turkey, completing 16 of 21 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. And it was just his playoff debut. His near-perfect passer rating of 157.2 left the Cowboys looking bad. But most importantly, he tied with C.J. Stroud for the fourth-highest single-game passer rating in playoff history.

But coming back to Irvin’s issues with the Cowboys, he gave Jimmy Johnson’s example and explained how the coach presented clear goals to his team. He shared how Johnson would yell, “‘Right here, we have about four to five weeks to accomplish our goal,’ … Each man on this team should be ready to hang from a tree by his, you know… And if you ain’t ready, get your a*s off the field.”

Dak Prescott and co. might have to learn from their mistakes. He went into the Packers game coming off one of his best seasons. He even won his first All-Pro honors. People expected him to be sharp, but that didn’t happen. He threw the ball into the coverage several times time but there seemed to be no synchronization with CeeDee Lamb.

It wasn’t just another playoff loss for Dallas – it was a continuation of a frustrating trend against Green Bay. The Packers have won nine of their last ten matchups against the Cowboys, including two playoff heartbreakers. The 2014 ‘Dez caught it’ game still haunts Cowboys fans, and now they have another nightmare to add to the collection. But let us turn our attention to Jordan Love and the Packers as well.

Jordan Love and team wrote a new chapter in the Packers-Cowboys rivalry…

While Irvin tore into the Cowboys, he couldn’t help but tip his hat to the Packers’ young quarterback. In fact, his performance was reminiscent of his predecessor, Aaron Rodgers, who famously tormented the Cowboys in playoff matchups. The young quarterback showed poise beyond his years, threading a 20-yard touchdown to Dontayvion Wicks against a six-man rush and later connecting with Luke Musgrave for a 38-yard score that put the game out of reach.

Romeo Doubs torched the Dallas secondary, hauling in six passes for a career-high 151 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Aaron Jones, continuing his Cowboys-killing ways, rumbled for 118 yards and three scores, bringing his total to nine touchdowns in just four career games against Dallas.

This game added another layer to the storied Packers-Cowboys playoff rivalry. It echoed Green Bay’s divisional-round victory in January 2017, where Aaron Rodgers’ last-second heroics led to a 34-31 win.

With the game earlier this year, the dust settles on this playoff shocker and both teams face uncertain futures. The Packers are riding high with Love, but contract negotiations loom. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that while “the vibes right now are positive,” the team isn’t close to a deal with their young star.

Meanwhile, for Irvin and Cowboys fans, this loss is a bitter reminder of what once was. During his playing days, Irvin was part of a Cowboys team that thrived under playoff pressure. In 16 career playoff games, he racked up 87 receptions for 1,315 yards and 8 touchdowns- numbers that speak about the very intensity he found lacking in the current Cowboys squad. What do you think?
