Before Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs had only clinched two Super Bowls in 50 years. Fast forward to Mahomes’ era, and guess what? Super Bowl LV wasn’t as kind to the Chiefs. That was despite being the best team in the NFL that season with a 14-2 record. Injuries to the offensive line and crucial drops led to a 31-9 defeat by the Buccaneers. That ended with Tom Brady claiming his historic seventh ring.
Rewind to Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs orchestrated a stunning comeback. And managed to score 21 points in the last 7 minutes to defeat the 49ers 31-20. How were the Chiefs faring before Mahomes?
The Pre-Mahomes Era

In the inaugural Super Bowl I on Jan. 15, 1967, the Chiefs faced the Packers but suffered a 35-10 defeat. QB Len Dawson was sacked six times! And the Chiefs’ offense struggled on third down. Fun fact: it was the Chiefs’ owner who gave the final game of the season its name. It struck Lamar Hunt after he saw his daughter playing with a “super ball”, a bouncy toy popular with children.
The Chiefs marked their triumphant return to the Super Bowl against an NFC North foe, defeating Minnesota 23-7 on Jan. 11, 1970. Despite being involved in a federal gambling investigation, quarterback Len Dawson maintained his composure and earned Super Bowl MVP. The defining play, “65 Power Toss Trap,” orchestrated by head coach Hank Stram, sealed the victory with a touchdown from running back Mike Garrett.
