The air is filled with rumors regarding Bill Belichick and his future with the Patriots. No Bostonian or Patriots fan could ever think such a day would come. Unfortunately it is here, but the fans and the franchise must consider once again whether is it the right choice.

One must remember that it is Belichick who made the modern Patriots. Before his arrival, the Patriots had appeared in the Super Bowl only once in 1986, losing against the Chicago Bears. For decades, Belichick had the owner Robert Kraft’s unyielding loyalty, but now the winds of change are blowing. What will be the future?

Many teams are circling Belichick to hire him if and when the Pats let go of him. But what happens to his current crop of players? 25-year-old QB Mac Jones is one of Belichick’s protégé just like Tom Brady was in the early 2000s. If Belichick does end up going away from the Patriots, Mac Jones’ time might also be over!

Not only that, but Belichick has also been at the helm of the Patriots for 23 years now. His fingerprints are all over the squad. It’s practically impossible to remove Belichick and not let his influence linger in the halls of Gillette Stadium. Almost all the players on the roster would be terrified of losing their boss.

Belichick and his influence are irreplaceable on the Patriots, he is a part of the ecosystem. Removing him in the middle of the season might spell disaster for the Patriots. A disaster many teams have faced before.

Firing an HC for better might make it worse

The Pittsburgh Steelers were a menace to play against under the HC Dick LeBeau. He guided them to two Super Bowl wins in ’05 and ’08. But was let go in 2014 after subpar performances. Subsequent coaches have tried to make the Steelers into an offensive unit, which has worked disastrously for the Steelers in recent years.

Instances such as Ron Rivera’s firing from the Chicago Bears in 2007 to Bruce Arians’ from the Cleveland Browns in 2003 will serve as a cautionary tale for the Patriots. Will they pay attention to these cautions? Only time will tell.
