In the Saturday night clash between the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions, the scoreboard might have lacked an abundance of points. But the spectacle compensated with riveting momentum shifts. There were high-stakes two-point conversion attempts, and the ceremonial grandeur of a Ring of Honor induction.

The Cowboys, determined to break a two-game losing streak, emerged victorious with a tight 20-19 win at AT&T Stadium. The narrative reached its zenith in the final minutes as the Lions, striving for a comeback, faced three consecutive attempts to convert a decisive two-point play. However, that wasn’t the mistake because of which the Lions lost the game, as per Shannon Sharpe.

The implications of Saturday’s outcome reverberated significantly in the NFC playoff, especially for the Detroit Lions. Entering the week with a formidable 11-4 record, the Lions were in a three-way tie with the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles for the best record in the conference. A potential win against the Dallas Cowboys would have positioned Detroit to vie for the coveted No. 1 seed. Also, they would’ve been placed a valuable first-round bye in the impending playoffs.

However, the stark reality unfolded as the Lions faced defeat, eroding their prospects for securing these playoff privileges. Besides the unfortunate two-point play, Shannon Sharpe talked about the team’s mistake. He said, “You know the Cowboys, they’re undersized. What they don’t want you to do is to come downhill at them. So they’re looking to make everything bounce. I mean damn, Lions. I’m sure you watch films, I’m sure your O-line coach told you, I’m sure your running back told you. Do not let them cross your face.

Furthermore, he continued, “And almost every time, when they didn’t let them cross their face, 5, 6, 7, 8 yards, 9 yards, 10 yards, it’s really that simple.” So Sharpe told them where they lacked in the game. However, if they were assigned those two points by the referee, the Lions could have won the game by one point.

In a moment that seemed scripted for triumph, the Detroit Lions orchestrated what appeared to be the perfect play. However, the elation was swiftly curtailed by the intervention of a flag. With a mere 27 seconds remaining and trailing 20-19, the Lions executed a clever play-action pass. The spotlight fell on offensive tackle Taylor Decker, who adeptly sneaked off the end of the line. And he found himself unnoticed at the backside of the end zone.

His catch seemed to promise a dramatic go-ahead moment, only to be marred by the referees’ decision to penalize him for illegal touching. After the game, Jared Goff said, “We get down there, get the touchdown and get the two-point conversion and yeah, it sucks. It’s unfortunate man. I don’t know if I’ve had this feeling before where you feel like you won but you didn’t.
