Baltimore Ravens had a convincing Christmas win at Levi’s Stadium, but things turned out ugly for the San Francisco 49ers. Although Brock Purdy had his fair share of challenges in the league that were also injury-driven, he had never had the type of on-field struggles that he experienced on Monday night. Lamar Jackson and his squad defeated the 49ers 33-19 in a ‘Lamarvellous’ fashion. Pat McAfee came forward with a convincing explanation for this loss.
The 49ers made a plan to slow down Jalen Hurts and his team in Week 13. They were successful too, as according to Nick Bosa, they followed the game’s blueprint and tried to keep Hurts in his pocket without allowing him space to escape. Most probably, they tried to implement the same plan on Lamar Jackson and the team.

In Tuesday’s episode of the ‘Pat McAfee Show,’ the former NFL punter questioned the effectiveness of the Niners’ game plan against quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson. He highlighted, “They said we hope everybody watches what we did against the Philadelphia Eagles because HomeField Advantage was still on the line for the NFC. I thought they were going to have a great plan for Lamar. I don’t know if those exist.” Pat McAfee emphasized the difficulty in stimulating Jackson’s unique skills, mentioning that you can’t put a wide receiver at quarterback to replicate what Jackson can do.
While he didn’t say the Niners embarrassed anyone, McAfee pointed out that players like Fred Warner found it challenging to handle situations where Jackson or Zay Flowers made cuts, and unexpected players like Nelson Agholor were scoring touchdowns. McAfee also emphasized that Jackson and Flowers have a strong connection, as seen in the recent game where the wide receiver had nine receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.

McAfee’s team noted that Lamar’s targets like Agholor and a backup tight end, may not be star players like Patrick Mahomes’ targets, but they are proving to be effective, making the Ravens a formidable team.
Meanwhile, now that the 49ers have lost to the Ravens, let’s dive deeper into its impact in the playoff race.

Can Niners clinch a playoff berth?
Trent Williams‘s groin injury came with a huge blow to the 49ers’ offense, and Brock Purdy’s Cardinals-like stinger injury added to that. Despite the disappointing Christmas Day, the Niners still have a chance to secure home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. To achieve this, they need victories in their last two regular season games: one against the Washington Commanders and the other against the Los Angeles Rams.
Currently, the 49ers, Eagles, and Detroit Lions share the same record (11-4). However, San Francisco holds the no. 1 seed due to tiebreakers over both the Eagles and the Lions. The Niners won their head-to-head matchup with the Eagles with a score of 42-19. Although the 49ers won’t play the Lions this season, they maintain an advantage in potential tie-breaking scenarios with the Lions because of a better record in conference games. On the other hand, the Ravens are currently the top seed in the AFC.
