Is Matthew Stafford the most underrated QB in the NFL right now? Let's hear your thoughts!

Not many players in the NFL get to experience their ‘Jordan moment.’ But Rams QB Matthew Stafford was fortunate enough to have his name written in the NFL folklore. Although some might have forgotten Stafford’s heroics against the Colts, where he led the Rams to a historic 29-23 victory in overtime. All-Pro RB Kyren Williams made sure everyone relived that moment when he appeared on Kay Adams’ talk show “Up & Adams.”

Speaking of his love for Matthew, Williams said, I see why young QBs wanna watch him. He’s a literal dog, he can make all the angle throws, he can throw the ball anywhere on the field.” Williams further points out the veteran QB’s prolific passer capabilities, that got him ranked at 11th in passing yardage, with 357 touchdown passes to his name.

Continuing further, the RB acknowledged Matthew’s resilience on the gridiron, stating, “And then he’s also you can think, and you can get him down and he’s get right back up and show you why. He’s not down and then just look at the end of the Colts game… he’s limping. But he throws the game-winning(Touchdown). That’s like Jordan moment.”

Williams reminisced about the moment that the Rams nation held close to their heart. Even after building a 23-0 lead during the first half with the help of Kyren Williams’s TDs and Stafford’s passing yards, the Colts managed to put on a sensational comeback led by rookie QB Anthony Richardson. The game continued with 23 unanswered points courtesy of the Colts, which eventually pushed the match to OT. However, when everyone’s heart was pounding fast, it all came down to Stafford’s time.

Carrying a hip injury, he ended up delivering the game-winning 22-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Puka Nacua. Thereby confirming a 29-23 victory for the Rams at Lucas Oil Stadium. In his interview with Kay Adams, Williams also mentions, “He’s been it doing since a long time. I remember going to my grandma’s house and watch Matthew Stafford play. And throw it to Calvin Johnson and so just being able to see him from there to play with him, and I can see I see why people follow and fall in love with him.”

Stafford, 35, spent more than a decade playing for the Detroit Lions. Before being traded to the Rams in the 2021 NFL season. However, during his time at Ford Field, he formed an impeccable partnership with WR Calvin Johnson. On the back of Stafford’s incredible passing accuracy, Johnson ended up etching his name in NFL history books for yards received during a season. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether Matthew’s contract is justified given his contributions to the Rams in the last four seasons.

New contract extension for Matthew Stafford!

Playing his first season under head coach Sean McVay, Matthew was able to deliver the Super Bowl LVI title. Missing only 10 games for the past two seasons, Matthews racked up 3,965 yards thrown and 24 touchdown passes within only 15 games. However, looking at his financials, Stafford was only due to earn $31 million in base salary this season.

Currently, on a four-year deal that supposedly makes him $160 million, there weren’t enough guarantees. With three years remaining on his contract, Matthews would have made only $15 million of his $27 million salary in 2025. While a $26 million salary in 2026 remained unguaranteed. But both parties were able to find a resolution as Stafford reported to the training camp.

McVay refused to mention the details behind the extension and instead replied by saying, “There was lot of dialogue geared towards finding a solution. That really suits our team. But also accommodates some of the things that represent Matthew’s worth for us.” Stafford, speaking to the reporters post-signing his extension, said, “It was a good agreement.” As fans, we can only hope that Stafford will be happy with his contract extension, while staying focused as the new NFL season is almost knocking on our doors.
