Since Tom Brady left the New England Patriots, they are looking for a quarterback. It’s still going on! They have changed their QB department this year. Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, and Joe Milton are 3 QBs on the team. Then the next question arose? Who will be their starting signal caller? Milton was never a serious contender. The contest was between the rookie and the veteran. And the veteran won. Wondering why we say so? Head Coach Jerod Mayo answered in his recent press conference.

While addressing a press conference on the 29th of August, Mayo said, “Friends, just like I told you guys 3 days ago, it’s a process as far as for who the starting quarterback is. We have decided; I have decided Jacoby Brissett will be 100% our starting quarterback. As an organization, we are 100% behind Jacoby.” The coach also talked to both QBs separately and informed the team’s plans for the season. Is it the right choice? Let’s check out their performances in the preseason to assess so.

During the preseason game against the Washington Commanders, the rookie made 13-of-20 passes for 126 yards, including a touchdown. His charisma on the gridiron was such that even Mayo said that the rookie outplayed the veteran. However, he also made a very critical remark, “I think it’s important to remember what’s good for the team today may not be good for the team weeks down the line. The challenge is, you want to win every single game now, but also we’re trying to build something special here.” Will there be something special this season? We’ll see.

Jerod Mayo’s announcement of Brissett as their starting quarterback also implies that he (Brissett) is fine. The 9-year NFL veteran injured his right shoulder against Commanders. There were doubts regarding his availability for the season starter, but looks like he will make it. It’s important. Brissett has spent time with Brady at the franchise and knows the team system. That would have also played a role. And there’s nothing to worry.

Maye has made a strong case for himself with his preseason performances. If Brissett doesn’t give the desired results, we can see the rookie on the field.

This decision isn’t Jerod Mayo’s alone

What’s your perspective on:

Jacoby Brissett as Patriots' starter—wise move or missed opportunity for Drake Maye?

Have an interesting take?

The Pats aren’t leaving any stone unturned for wins. After hiring Mayo as their head coach, they appointed Alex Van Pelt as their offensive coordinator and T. C. McCartney as their quarterbacks coach. This will be the first season (in coaching) at Pats for each of them. And while the HC has said that this (choosing Brissett as the starting QB) is his decision alone, it looks more like the trio’s decision.

A few days ago, Pelt clearly said, “Jacoby, Right now he’s our starting quarterback.” While he was impressed with Maye during the training camp and preseason, he told reporters that there’s a process by which a rookie QB is introduced in the league. Pelt himself believes the QB is the hardest position on the gridiron, and they don’t want the rookie QB to have a rough transition. McCartney also shares a similar viewpoint.

Patriots’ quarterback coach was also impressed with the rookie’s improvement in footwork and throwing. But he agreed with Van Pelt’s views that they would have their time with Maye.

Its revival time for the Pats. The coaches are leading from the front by making rational plans. Will it begin this season? Stay connected to read more on it.
