Did Byron Young's facemask foul unfairly seal the Rams' victory over the Vikings?

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Minnesota Vikings in their Week 8 game on Thursday night football. This victory, with 10 points, is a blessing for the team and the quarterback, who was earlier rumored to be traded to the Vikings. The game got rough for Sam Darnold and the officials missed that.

Nevertheless, the Rams are exhilarated with the win at SoFi Stadium. But this upbeat mood might not be experienced much by the Rams linebacker, Byron Young. Why? Well, because of his latest play that broke one NFL rule.

So, what happened was, during the game with 1:36 left, quarterback Sam Darnold was about to throw a pass. But, just at that moment, Byron Young approached Darnold and took him down for a game-sealing safety. He was seen holding the quarterback’s helmet while pulling him to the ground. Now, that’s clearly a facemask! However, this play was missed by the NFL referees. Hence, after the game, reporter Tom Pelissero informed that “Byron Young has a fine incoming for the blatant facemask officials missed.”

So, how much will he be fined? Well, according to the NFL rules, it is quite a possibility that Young will be fined somewhere between $11,255 and $16,883. That’s the fine design by the league in the facemask category.

Hence, although Los Angeles improved themselves in the NFL standings, as Pelissero mentioned, “Small price to pay for a game-sealing play” has changed “a lot of things for the Rams.” The team won 30-20 against Minnesota, and Sam Darnold and even the Rams fans were left surprised when no penalty was called. Well, sometimes that’s just how things unfold.

Vikings head coach have nothing to say to Byron Young?

The Vikings’ chance was missed, or to be precise was snatched away by Rams LB, Byron Young. This is because, in the game, if that foul had been called, they would’ve had a fighting chance. The Vikings would have gained fifteen yards, and a chance to tie the game with a touchdown, and a two-point conversion. Although it wasn’t going to be easy, they at least would have got the chance to try.

Nevertheless, the game was locked at 30-20 after that facemask episode, and just like that, the Vikings faced their second loss in the 2024 season. Now, after this, it’s obvious for the media to question Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell about his stance on this missed penalty. In general, many coaches would have shown anger in such cases, but O’Connell seems to not comment on it. He, during the presser, said, “It looked like he got it pretty good. I’m not going to get into a call or no-call. I told our team, officiating and all that stuff, for us to talk about that, for us to seek comfort in that is not how we’re going to respond to this. I really don’t have a comment on it.

So, as per the coach, instead of making excuses, they have to own their mistakes and look ahead.
