Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson’s hope of breaking the NFL record for the most receiving yards in a season ended when he was sidelined for 7 straight games because of a hamstring injury. He had opened the season by setting an NFL record in just the first four games he played. His 135.8 yards per game is the highest in the league’s history.

But before he could go on to break Calvin Johnson’s record of 1,964 yards by Week 15, an unfortunate hamstring injury took him out. Despite the setback, there’s some good news for Jefferson supporters.

The NFL took to X to share a video of Jefferson practicing on the field ahead of the Las Vegas Raiders game. The 24-year-old was seen suiting up for practice before he donned the uniform in a few hours. The Vikings hesitated to have him on the gridiron before they were sure he was 100% healthy, but he seems to have taken advantage of the bye week to recover.

A right hamstring injury ended Justin Jefferson’s hopes of breaking the NFL record for receiving yards in a season and eclipsing the 2,000-yard mark, at least for this year. But he is not one to give up so easily. Recognizing that it will be next to impossible to record more than 2,000 yards after missing out on 7 games, he has a new goal.

Will Jefferson reach his new goal?

On Thursday, Jefferson announced his new goal: “Since I got hurt the new goal is 1,000 yards. I want to end every single year over 1,000 yards.” He has 571 yards under his belt and 429 more yards to go. With his setback, the Miami Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill seems to be the player that will accomplish his 2,000-yard goal. Hill has 1,481 yards and will need 519 more yards.

In an interview, Jefferson lamented that he had to miss those 7 games. The Cheetah’s performance on the field has also been concerning to him as he missed out a lot due to his injury. “It’s a little tough to see Tyreek going crazy every single week, to see different people throughout the whole league doing tremendous things,” he said.
