Heads or tails? The outcome depends on the team’s luck, and picking either side of the coin gives the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers an equal chance of winning. However, one option stands out, consistently leading to more victories.
The winner of the coin gets an opportunity to go on offense first. In regular season games, the away team gets to call up first during the opening coin toss. However, even though the game is held at a neutral site during the Super Bowl, teams are still designated as “home” or “away.” So, which side will come for the Chiefs? Let’s find out. Let’s also dig into how many times the Chiefs have won the Super Bowl when calling the toss.

The Super Bowl alternates between conferences each year for home and away designations. Therefore, in Super Bowl LVIII, the 49ers will make the calls against the Chiefs. In the last Super Bowl game, the Chiefs had this chance to have their call first against the Philadelphia Eagles; they chose “tails” and subsequently won. In nine years, teams calling tails won the Super Bowl coin toss six times. The longest streak from a single result occurred from Super Bowl XLII to Super Bowl XLVII, landing heads five times consecutively. Before Super Bowl LVII, the team winning the coin toss lost in eight consecutive Super Bowls.
The Chiefs broke this streak last season by choosing tails, deferring to the second half, and winning against the Eagles with a score of 38-35. The Chiefs have won the toss only two times (Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LV). In the last Super Bowl, they chose tails, and in the previous toss win, they chose heads but lost the game to the Buccaneers. Apart from that, in Super Bowl LIV, when facing off against the 49ers, San Francisco won the toss after choosing tails; however, in that game, the Chiefs made a remarkable comeback in the second half and won with an 11-point lead. Then, in Super Bowl IV, the Vikings won the toss by opting for tails. In that game, too, the Chiefs defeated the Vikings. In the first Super Bowl, the Packers won the toss with heads and the matchup against the Chiefs.
Out of the first 57 Super Bowls, tails came up 30 times and heads 27 times, and when compared, the tails have more Super Bowl wins than the heads. The 49ers will get this chance this time and likely opt for the tails again. Let’s see who wins the Super Bowl toss and trophy.
