The Super Bowl is just around the corner and the NFL has thrown another curveball. With the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers ready to lock horns after 4 years. Another Lombardi Trophy is on the line. But what does double overtime mean?
Last year the NFL altered its rules for playoff games going into overtime. And this rule will be applied in the Super Bowl as well. So how many Super Bowls have been won in OT since its inception in 1967?

The new rules for the playoff games since 2023 are that a game cannot be finished as a tie, like the regular season. So there are no limits for the number of times overtime can be called in a game. Previously, the game ended with a touchdown on the opening possession of overtime.
Regarding Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII matchup, CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus quipped, “The NFL has alerted us that, for the first time ever, we will have a double overtime game (in the Super Bowl).”

Hence, for the first time in history, the NFL and CBS are prepared for double overtime. “The NFL has alerted us that, for the first time ever, we will have a double overtime game (in the Super Bowl)”, said Sean McManus. McManus is the CBS Sports Chairman, and CBS will be broadcasting the game.
However, in 57 previous Super Bowls, only one game ever has gone into overtime. Let’s look back at the game and can it happen this weekend?
Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes are linked
At Super Bowl LI, the New England Patriots took the Atlanta Falcons to the overtime. In this 2017 Super Bowl, the Patriots scored 19 in the last quarter and tied the game. And during the opening, the Patriots scored again within seconds to finish the game.

And if Patrick Mahomes leads his team to victory in the Super Bowl, just like Tom Brady did. The comparisons will be impossible to stop. However, those will be earned at that point.
