“3 of a kind + a pair = a full house!” The ‘pair’ Jordan Matthews and Cheyna Matthews has three sons – Josiah, Lionel, and Cairo. Jordan Matthews and Cheyna Lee Williams met at Vanderbilt. They tied the knot in February 2018. After having two boys, Josiah and Lionel, in March 2022, they revealed they were expecting a third child.

In 2017, before welcoming Josiah, Jordan Matthews was not very busy during his time in Buffalo. So, he got to spend a lot of quality time with his wife. “When I was in Buffalo, there was like nothing to do there, except … have fun with your wife,” Matthews explained. “She got pregnant. So we always say we got a Buffalo baby. Ain’t nothing to do there, except each other.”

Eventually, after their social marriage, the duty of raising children hit them pretty quickly. Cheyna revealed six days after their celebration that she was expecting a child and would miss the 2018 NWSL season, intending to play again in 2019. She had watched other players return after pregnancies and asked Sydney Leroux of the Orlando Pride for assistance. “I wasn’t really concerned if I was going to be able to play physically,” Matthews said. “It was more just situationally with the family, making sure I keep that first.”

As Jordan Matthews got ready to make his next trip in the NFL, this time with the New England Patriots, the two welcomed a child named Josiah. Jordan realized that he was more required at home with the newborn than he was to join a new team, even though it needed a lot of attention.

“It can be easy as a football player to be extremely selfish,” Jordan Matthews said. “But I wanted to show her as best as I could that I was wanting to do what it took to help out the family in any way possible. People always ask me, ‘What’s it like taking care of a newborn?’ I feel like the newborn needs Cheyna to eat and sleep. So really, I spent the bulk of my time taking care of Cheyna.”

And as for Cheyna Matthews, motherhood is her “24-hour commitment” as long as she lives. It can be difficult to strike a balance between employment and parenthood, as many parents are aware. However, the Matthews were aware of the level of dedication required from the start. “We would always try and make sure that if there was something that needed to get done, we would just do it,” Jordan Matthews said. “We’d never keep score.”

“When it comes to raising Josiah, we’re not saying, ‘Well, this is how my parents did it.’ We say, ‘What does God say about this particular issue? What does God say about friendships we should have or the places we should go?’”

And with this immense understanding, Jordan Matthews has been a strong pillar of support helping his wife to get back to what she loves the most.

In April of 2021, Matthews began working out with Racing to get back in game form. She was added back to Jamaica’s preliminary roster for a summer series of matches at the conclusion of that month. On June 5, during a defeat against Portland, she made her Racing debut by substituting for six minutes.

“It’s extremely incredible to have two children and still be playing professional sports,” Jordan Matthews said. With another boy living in the family, so is the routine that the two have maintained. Jordan would get up with Josiah before heading to training camp, with Cheyna taking care of Lionel. Josiah enjoys Jordan’s pancakes a lot. “He doesn’t want me to make them,” laughed Cheyna Matthews.

After brushing their teeth, Jordan drove Josiah to school while he went to train. Cheyna was left to take over the routine for both boys after Jordan left for training camp. She prepares Josiah up until Lionel awakens. Then a babysitter shows up; Cheyna picks Josiah up on the way back from practice after dropping him off at school.

When Racing plays in a different city, Cheyna’s mother meets her there to assist look for Lionel, who has to travel with her. Their parents also frequently offer to help watch the kids when they’re away for games. In addition, Jordan gets up at five in the morning to speak with Cheyna before she leaves for practice. The two then have another conversation before the boys go to bed, which is often before the 49ers’ walkthrough.

Well, as time passed, the kids started understanding their parents’ profession. Especially, the eldest one!

Around Josiah’s three years old, he started knowing a little bit more about what his parents do. However, he frequently stays up late watching racing matches. He will therefore watch the first two halves of the majority of them on TV before turning them in. “A lot of times, he hasn’t been able to see me play unless it’s a playback because I hadn’t been starting, so I’m not playing until the second half,” Cheyna Matthews said.

However, a game on August 8 against Kansas City got underway at 3 p.m. Jordan’s parents were present as Josiah received his first jersey. In the 69th minute, with Racing leading 2-1, Cheyna entered the game. For the first time since giving birth to her second child, she broke free to find the back of the net during her season-high 21 minutes of play.

“For the game to be at three o’clock and for him to be able to be there, actually see me go on and see me score a goal, I thought that he would mention it when I saw him,” Cheyna Matthews said. “But all he said was that I was really sweaty. So he’s also my little humble reminder that all that work, it means nothing to him. I’m mom.”

Since then, Cheyna Mathews has attended Racing’s Women’s Cup victory over FC Bayern Munich with the boys and the rest of her family.
