With Olave's injury, are the Saints' playoff hopes dashed, or can they still turn it around?

It’s like the Saints are in a rough spot, hoping for a break. But luck? Yeah, not much hope there, either. Especially with the latest update on WR Chris Olave. That brutal hit he took in the week 9 loss to the Panthers? It’s not looking good.

Sorry, no good news here. With his injury, the team’s shaky record, and all these specialists getting involved, Olave might have just taken his last snap for 2024, per Ian Rapoport. The hearsay is he’s about to land on IR, meaning he’s sidelined for at least four games.

Meanwhile, there wasn’t any optimism from interim HC Darren Rizzi as well. He kept it real. That is? Yup, they aren’t going to take risks when a concussion is what they are dealing with. Olave’s health comes first. “We’re trying to figure out what’s best now for the long term,” he said. Forget “Chris Olave the player” for a sec—it’s “Chris Olave the person” they’re focused on.

And it sounds like they’re taking it seriously. Rizzi mentioned Olave’s working with both team medical staff and independent specialists. “Everyone here on our medical staff has been in touch with them in the process,” Rizzi added. So while Saints fans are left holding their breath, it’s clear the priority is making sure Olave’s set for the long haul.

It’s a tough one to take. But, let’s be honest, for Olave, this is the best possible outcome considering his history with head injuries.

Chris Olave’s fight against concussions

What’s your perspective on:

With Olave's injury, are the Saints' playoff hopes dashed, or can they still turn it around?

Have an interesting take?

Sure, the Saints are losing big with Chris Olave set to miss. I mean, this guy was a hot-shot, drafted at No. 11 in 2022, and in his first two seasons, he racked up over 1,000 receiving yards each year. A young weapon for New Orleans, no doubt. But this season, things took a turn.

Eight games in, 400 yards, a TD, and dang, the concussion. The message? Sometimes, even the NFL says enough is enough. And Olave heard it, stepping back to take care of himself. “Thank God. Always keep ya faith,” he wrote on Instagram, reminding fans to “be grateful for what you got before it’s taken away.” Wise words from a guy who’s taken more than a few hard knocks.

Olave’s concussion count now sits at four in the NFL. He’s in danger of getting hit, so much so that he switched to a safer helmet after his first one this season (against the Chargers). But guess what? He chose to skip the Guardian Cap during games. Coach Rizzi weighed in, saying, “We’re more worried about Chris Olave the person, and making sure that everything’s good.” Football can wait; health is a priority.

As for his future? His brother, Josh, hinted on X that NOLA might not be worth it. For now, though, Olave’s taking it day by day. What the future unfolds we should be hearing it pretty soon if the wideout himself has something planned for himself.
