The happy day for Hayden Hurst and the Panthers turned into a horrible one in the blink of an eye. On the very day he returned to practice, the TE’s father announced that Hurst had been diagnosed with post-traumatic amnesia. He shared that the player’s recovery would be slow and his comeback was uncertain.
While the Panthers took a hit with the update, a far worse effect lands on the player himself. According to medical reports, post-traumatic amnesia, or PTA, is a serious problem that can affect a person’s memories of day-to-day events. But the real concern here is whether the TE faces a life threat with it.
How serious is PTA, the condition that Hayden Hurst encountered?

British charitable organization Headway.org quotes it as “Post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) is the time after a period of unconsciousness when the injured person is conscious and awake, but is behaving or talking in a bizarre or uncharacteristic manner.” Additionally, their report also states that a person with this condition may forget incidents that happened hours, or even a few minutes ago.
The symptoms of PTA include confusion, agitation, distress, and anxiety. It may also account for uncharacteristic behaviors like violence, aggression, swearing, and shouting for no reason.
According to the site, it also has a direct adverse effect on the person’s family members, as the affected can fail to recognize them, and come as strangers/unapproachable. The biggest symptom, however, remains his present memory loss itself.

But there is one aspect of the condition that might come as the ultimate revival for the family.
Hayden Hurst does not face a life threat, but it’s up to him
The good news is that PTA doesn’t stay forever, it’s just a time-bound condition that will eventually pass. While in most cases it lasts for minutes, hours, days, or weeks, in rare cases it might even last for months, according to the journal. Additionally, the PTA is not fatal. The condition “itself does not have any adverse effects unless the person’s behavior causes them to injure themselves”, says the report.

Clearly, the effect of the condition could be long-lasting on the TE, and there’s a chance he might take months to recover from it. While the only hope for the family will be to wait and let it pass, praying for Hurst. All of these are made more saddening by the fact that the tight end actually returned to the practice the same morning, but the end of the day turned out to be one the worst days in his life, and a bad experience altogether for the family and the Panthers.
