They say change is the only constant. But changes are often tough to reckon with. Aren’t they? Unpredictability can take anyone by surprise. Even those surrounded by strength and discipline, like NFL coaches. San Francisco 49ers‘ seasoned O-line coach, Chris Foerster, faced a similar challenge in his life.
Foerster’s experience was perhaps far more difficult for him than any battle on the field. The woman who stood beside him for nearly 4 decades was diagnosed with a life-altering illness that would change their lives forever.

Who Was Michelle Massey Foerster?
Michelle Massey Foerster was born on October 12, 1961. She was born in Lewiston, Maine. And she was far more than just the wife of a prominent coach. She served as a dedicated nurse, a caring mother, and a community pillar. Michelle graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1982. She then went on to spend over 4 decades in the world of healthcare. Yeah, that long in service!

From working at 5th Avenue Pediatrics in St. Petersburg to helping people battle addiction at Tranquil Shores, Michelle’s motto was clear – put others before yourself. And that compassion extended far beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics.
Michelle was an active member of the church. And was admired for her selfless nature. She too was passionate about sports. She could often be found in the stands of the San Francisco 49ers and the Boston Red Sox. Or else? Spending some quality time with her grandchildren. Her impact on her family and community was immense, and her legacy lives on.

Michelle and Chris shared their lives for years. Navigating the ups and downs that came along the way, together. They married way back in 1985. Although there were reports about their separation, they stood by each other’s side no matter what. Together the duo raised three children. Kathleen, Jake, and Micah. But their lives were destined to take an unexpected turn when Michelle was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2018.
Michelle, however, led her final battle quietly yet powerfully. She was given just 6 months to live. Yet she defied the odds. Turning 6 months to 6 years, thanks to her strength and determination. Her death on February 4, 2024, marked the end of that struggle. But she left behind a legacy of resilience and love.

Foerster, 63, a coach known for his tough demeanor, shared a deeply emotional tribute to his wife. In the weekly news conference on 6th December, he shared with reporters that he would be wearing cleats in honor of his wife. He’d be paying the tribute when the 49ers face the Bears on Sunday. Heartwarming indeed!
Reflecting on her journey, Chris candidly spoke, “Ovarian cancer lost my wife on February 4, 2024. But she didn’t lose a battle. She fought a good fight. She gave us all six years and I proudly wear (the cleats) for the cause.” His words indeed were a powerful reflection of Michelle’s strength.
Michelle died at 62. This was just a week before the 49ers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. A trying period for the family. Nevertheless, Foerster’s initiative was a part of the NFL’s annual “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign. The campaign allowed players and coaches to wear personalized cleats to show their support for various charitable causes of their choice.
Despite the heartbreak, Chris Foerster remains proud of how Michelle lived. Focusing on her legacy rather than the illness that ultimately took her. As the 49ers’ offensive line coach continues his demanding job, his tribute to Michelle serves as a reminder of the importance of love and family amidst all things professional in the world.
