The Texans want change. HC DeMeco Ryans feels there is no other way they could achieve what they want to. That’s why he fired their OC, Bobby Slowik. It was the same story in 2023 and 2024 with 10 wins and 7 losses in the regular season. In the playoffs, they were eliminated in the AFC divisional game both years. But another team has the same mindset going into the 2025 offseason. Las Vegas Raiders, and their newly appointed HC Pete Carroll!
According to Houston reporter Aaron Wilson, they interviewed the Texans quarterback coach Jerrod Johnson for the position of their offensive coordinator. It would increase the headaches for DeMeco Ryans, as they would have to find another coach for CJ Stroud. Raiders are also in talks with former Seahawks and Lions offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell.

For now, these transfers might affect DeMeco Ryans’ locker room. He has worked hard for this staff. And the results were also great. Not as deep a playoff run as they wanted, but still great. Jerrod Johnson was a potential candidate for a promotion to offensive coordinator, but there is competition now.
Tom Brady is cooking something at the Raiders. As the head coach, Pete Carroll is trying to get his old weapons back. NFL legend Chase Daniel also said two days ago on Scoop City with Diana Russini that the Raiders could become a totally different team if Russell Wilson also joins them. Now, that’s a different ballgame altogether.
The Texans are trying to sort out their staff. And they have interviewed many people. It’s interesting.
DeMeco Ryans tries to sort out the OC position
The task on his shoulders is huge. At a conference close to the end of the 2024 season, CJ Stroud openly supported Bobby Slowik, saying, “I am on Bobby’s side.” But the HC didn’t pay any heed to it and fired him. According to the Houston Chronicle, he has interviewed 6 other candidates than Johnson till January 31st.

They interviewed Jeff Nixon, who was with the Panthers from 2020 to 2022 (as offensive coordinator and promoted to assistant head coach) and the Giants as RB coach in 2023 before moving to Syracuse as OC for 2024. DeMeco Ryans also talked to the Buccaneers‘ quarterbacks coach from 2020 to 2024, Thad Lewis.
Texans senior offensive assistant for the last 2 years, Bill Lazor, is also one of the potential candidates. They also talked to Grant Udinski, who became the Vikings‘ assistant offensive coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024. So, they are in talks with a lot of coaches.

However, Ryans and all of us need to wait for a bit as the coaches also want to assess all their options before settling on one. It’s a crazy carousel!
