Cam Akers' tribute to his mom—does this make him the most inspiring player in the NFL?

In his last game, Cam Akers put on a solid performance for the Houston Texans, racking up crucial yards in the final quarter to help push his team forward. But beyond the field, the running back is making an even bigger impact by becoming a part of the NFL’s Crucial Catch initiative.

Through his recent visit to Houston Methodist West Hospital, he aims to support cancer awareness and early detection. Akers, whose own mother battled breast cancer, took time to meet with cancer patients alongside the Texans Cheerleaders. “I just like to come out and connect with people, let them know I’m praying for them,” he shared, reflecting on his personal connection to the cause. His presence brought hope and smiles as he offered encouragement to those fighting the same battle his mom once faced. “My mom had breast cancer, and it was a shocking time for our family. But she fought for her kids, and I learned to never complain,” he said, adding, “It made me a fighter.”

Akers was only 11 when his mother, Angela Neal, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. “you know, my mom had breast cancer. So I just like to come out and connect people. And just so I’m praying for you.” The RB told the patients. Akers got emotional hearing the patient’s story about his cancer struggle. Wiping his tears, wearing a mask, he says, “I am not crying, It’s the mask.”

As challenges kept on coming, his mother remained strong for her family, and Cam carried that resilience into his life and career. Watching her battle and overcome, everything showed Akers that there’s really nothing in life worth complaining about. Now, Akers honors her by giving back and bringing hope to others facing similar struggles. Overcoming all difficulties and hardships, Cam’s mother has always supported him in his glowing career. The Texans’ RB seems to have a great performance this season so far.

Akers’ story, however, goes beyond the field. His mother, Angela, the cancer warrior’s strength has always been a source of inspiration for the running back. Even when Akers faced a painful rib injury in his rookie season, his mother was ready to rush to his side. “I wanted to be on the first plane to L.A.,” Angela recalled, but Akers reassured her, “No, ma, I am going to be fine.”
