Can Bo Nix prove he's worth the hype, or is Sean Payton's strategy setting him up to fail?

The Bo Nix train is coming to a halt. He’s just not giving out the same flashes of brilliance anymore. Fair enough. He’s officially in the big leagues now, and things tend to get a little tougher. Especially when you’re up against the likes of Aaron Rodgers and the Jets‘ defense. The Denver Broncos won, but there were a lot of questions about Denver’s offense.

To kick things off, Nix completed less than 50% of his passes for just 60 yards. That’s quite unbecoming of a 12 overall pick, wouldn’t you agree? The Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis would. He thinks Nix is not up to the mark and limited by Sean Payton’s offense. So, the quarterback would have to do more than just throw for 60 yards to impress this Super Bowl-winning RB.

The Broncos are up against the Raiders next and Pelissero was invested in Terrell Davis’ take on Bo Nix through the last four weeks. Davis finds Bo Nix to be “inconsistent.” Davis thinks Nix can do better, but it would be a “process” to go through. But there’s a problem, people want “instant gratification,” and Nix might not be able to deliver that. Not now anyways.

“It’s four games, right? And we all want him to show and look like he’s the 12 overall pick immediately. We want instant gratification. It’s a process, it really is. And I try not to judge anybody until I see more of a sample size,” Terrell Davis mentioned on The Rich Eisen Show. Let’s talk about the sample size then.

That win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was probably the best game he’s had in his rookie season. 216 yards, a rushing touchdown and a big 26-7 dub against the Bucs, what’s there to complain about, right? That’s somewhat concerning because none of his receivers scored a TD despite him throwing more than 200 yards. Nix ran for a third yard TD in the first quarter and that’s it. Rest was the courtesy of Jaleel McLaughlin and Will Lutz.

The win against the Jets was also a bit concerning. Though there was that one 8-yard passing TD. But there’s one thing common in both the games. Nix didn’t take a sack in the last two games he won. But in the first two games against Seattle and Pittsburgh, Nix was sacked twice in each game and threw the same number of picks in each game.

Also, the Broncos have bad third down efficiency, and they are taking huge losses over penalty too. They had 9 penalties over 129 yards in the Steelers game. In the last two games they’ve won, Nix played it safe. Didn’t throw a pick, didn’t get sacked, just safe football. Maybe that’s what’s stopping him from being an absolute dominator.

Terrell Davis Knows when Bo Nix is at his best

Coming back to the topic of “instant gratification,” Sean Payton called out the media for “looking for the perfect picture, the perfect game.” Having a perfect game is a “Shangri-La,” a myth that doesn’t exist. The Broncos head coach praised Nix and lent credence to the young quarterback. But at the same time, Payton thinks that younger players are not that great with “execution.” However, the Broncos Hall of Famer knows that Nix plays better on the fly.

“You want to seem moments in a game or throws or something more consistently that looks like the 12 overall pick. So far, we haven’t seen a lot of him. He does play well when they kind of go with a more hurried up offense when he’s allowed to just react. He seems to play well on that but,” Davis noted.

Payton is a phenomenal coach, no doubt, but he is a kind of chasing perfection since he’s trying to get the “execution” right. That’s a huge part of football, but maybe Nix should be allowed to move freely and play like he wants to play. At least for a quarter. Maybe that will help him because right now, he’s 31 in the ranking of starting QBs when it comes to passer rating.

Not only that, but Nix is also at the bottom (31) when we talk about average length of completions. His one touchdown pass puts him at the 32 position, dead last. But what does Nix have to say about all this? When the Jets game ended, we found out that both QBs, Nix and Rodgers, struggled because of bad weather. Sean Payton thinks that’s not an “excuse.”

Nix has the same thought, but he assured that he’s going to improve. “Sunday’s tough to evaluate because it was a sloppy game — a lot of rain, a lot of things weather-affected,” Nix said. “… But it’s a lot better watching it knowing you won it. … The last time we had a chance to really get around and spin it, and we did a really good job [vs. Tampa Bay in Week 3]. Hopefully we continue to improve on that, and I think I will.”

People wanted Nix to put up big numbers and give them “instant gratification.” Some might be in for fantasy football. But Nix can’t control the weather, can he? A rookie quarterback going against a vet and a team backed by great defense. Maybe the Broncos QB deserves some credit. Some things are out of control and for this rookie, things might get better with time.
