Is Carson Wentz right to have faith in Mahomes despite the Chiefs' offensive woes?

What’s up with Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs winning every game while missing so many of their core players? The 3x Super Bowl winner admitted his team was not up to the standards and threw himself under the bus. But Mahomes still made big plays against the Atlanta Falcons and maintained a spotless regular season record as week 3 concluded.

The Kansas City Chiefs are on their way to three peat and cannot afford to lose games early on. How do they plan to win without having Isiah Pacheco and Marquise Brown missing from their roster? The answer is simple enough: they have a “do whatever it takes” mentality and everyone in the locker room has blind faith in the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback.

Hall of Famer coach Tony Dungy did a post-game segment for NBC, where he revealed the bits and pieces of a conversation he had with Carson Wentz before the game. The Chiefs smartly changed their left tackle position while missing out on Isaiah Pacheco. So, the former coach picked Carson Wentz’s brain about the looming uncertainties within the roster.

“I talked to Carson Wentz before the game and I asked him, the backup quarterback, ‘What’s this game going to be like? You’ve got your left tackle changed, you’ve got different running backs in.’ He said, ‘Well, we’ll be close and then Pat will make it happen at the end of the game. That’s what they believe, and that’s what they are doing,” Tony Dungy said on NFL on NBC’s post game segment.

The Chiefs were certainly close to the Falcons at one point, but Mahomes and the Chiefs’ defense clutched in the last legs of the game. The Falcons really couldn’t do much after the 3rd quarter touchdown pass to Smith-Schuster.

But coming back to the roster uncertainties, Andy Reid benched the rookie tackle Kingsley Suamataia and put Wanya Morris as the starting left tackle. The doubts around Suamataia started surfacing after the week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals that saw the rookie tackle pull out of the game. Mahomes threw 2 picks in the last game and was sacked twice, so Andy Reid thought of making some changes to the O-Line. Reid didn’t blame the rookie but mentioned that he has a lot to learn.

While we’re on the matter of discussing changes, the game against the Bengals also debilitated the featured running back Isaiah Pacheco, who broke his fibula and will be out for at least 8 weeks. Carson Steele was subbed in Pacheco’s absence and he did a phenomenal job of holding his own tonight.

The game against the Bengals was uncomfortably close (26-25) and Patrick Mahomes thinks that he could do better running the offense.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense woes continue

For starters, Mahomes’ BFF, Travis Kelce hasn’t done much since the start of the season. Maybe he’s gearing up for bigger stages. Who knows? However, it’s important to note that the Chiefs TE only had 8 receptions in the past 3 games and a total of 69 yards to show for it. A player like Travis Kelce not scoring a single touchdown in 3 games is a bit concerning.

Mahomes spoke to the media after the game and here are his takeaways from the past 3 weeks. “We haven’t played good really all three games,” the 3x Super Bowl winner said. “We’ve been able to win. That speaks for the character of the team, the grit, how we’ve been in these situations before. But I’ll speak, especially offensively me, myself, I feel like I haven’t played very well. That’s not a stats thing. I feel like I’m missing opportunities whenever they’re out there and not throw the ball at the exact spot I want it to be at.”

As mentioned earlier, Mahomes threw 2 interceptions in the last game and one each in the week 1 and week 3 games. He absolutely balled out in the game against the Baltimore Ravens, but his performance in the Bengals game, again, was a bit concerning. In this game, though, Mahomes completed 26 of his 39 passes over 217 yards. He also threw two touchdown passes to Rashee Rice and JuJu Smith-Schuster, along with a pick.

Mahomes has taken the responsibility of managing Kelce’s lackluster performance, Pacheco and Hollywood Brown’s absence, and O-Line concerns. All this has also forced the Chiefs to take early action.
