Believe it or not, Patrick Mahomes was drafted tenth. Yeah, it sounds unbelievable, but that’s the NFL draft. The game of scouting for top-tier talent has gone through massive evolution over the years. Thanks to the internet and social media, scouts now have a treasure trove of information at their fingertips. Despite this high-tech era, teams can still fumble in the recruiting process.

It’s a storyline fans witness every NFL Draft season. Teams reaching for a player, potentially passing up on the next big superstar. That happened with ten teams. They passed on Mahomes!

Patrick Mahoes, the diamond in the rough

In a recent chat with Adam Schefter, Alex Smith spilled the beans, revealing that Chiefs GM Brett Veach was head over heels for Mahomes after his freshman year. Talk about early recognition! “He was in love with Patrick,” the former Chiefs QB said. The Chiefs’ front office saw the spark in him during his collegiate days and knew they had to make a move. But clearly, not everyone saw the same promise in him.

He was the 10th overall player picked. And while this might have been a miss by the other nine teams, it has recently been revealed that the Chiefs were in on him the entire time. Fast forward to today, and Mahomes is widely hailed as the best quarterback in the NFL. He’s now onto his fourth Super Bowl in five years. However, he won’t let hubris get to him.

Mahomes is not one to get complacent

“You don’t take it for granted,” Mahomes said post-game. “So it truly is special just to do it with these guys after what we’ve been through all season long. […] But I told them, ‘The job’s not done.’ Our job now is to prepare ourselves to play a good football team in the Super Bowl and try to get that ring.”

Mahomes just keeps adding more glitter to his already stellar résumé. Mahomes is a two-time Super Bowl winner, clinching the MVP award both times. But that’s not all. He boasts a two-time NFL MVP, six Pro Bowl appearances, one Offensive Player Of The Year title, two First Team All-Pro nods, and one Second Team All-Pro mention. And here’s the jaw-dropper. He’s just 28 years old and has been steering the Kansas City Chiefs for a mere six seasons!
