A few weeks ago, the Bengals were desperate to find a dependable replacement for Joe Burrow. Their woes stretched further after backup QB Jake Browning couldn’t pull the team out of their third consecutive defeat despite great individual efforts. But looks like the concerns may be gone for the season. As it stands currently, the QB was just warming up against the Steelers.
Browning has become the talk of the town after throwing for 354 yards with 86% passing accuracy against the mighty Jaguars. But who is the QB himself more curious with? It’s Wide Receiver Ja’Marr Chase and for an amusing reason. Browning revealed the reason behind a crazy act from the WR that occurred during the third quarter.

Chase caught a pass from Browning early in the third quarter and beat Jaguars’ cornerback Tyson Campbell in a footrace to score a 76-yard touchdown. What he did, however, moments before touching the endzone had Browning left wondering. The WR slowed down and completely turned around before running backward and locking views with Campbell in a ‘catch me if you can’ manner.
Replying to a reporter’s question at the post-game conference, Browning followed up on that incident. He said he was curious why Chase turned back before the touchdown. “I did not see any of the throw. I threw, it got hit, and then kind of just watched him run. And I saw him turn around near the goal line, and I was thinking why is he turning around? Then he said because he was getting disrespectful“, the QB revealed what Chase disclosed to him.

The forgettable NFL story and reawakening of Jake Browning
Jake Browning threw the first-ever pass of his NFL career in week 1 of this season despite joining the league in 2019. After guiding the Washington Huskies to a conference title with 43 touchdowns in 14 games, Browning had high hopes for himself. But he immediately caught the negative eyes in the 2019 NFL draft because of his comparatively undersized frame and subpar athleticism.
He spent his first two seasons in the Vikings‘ practice squad, never making it out of it. The team released Browning during the offseason of 2023, and the Bengals signed him to their scout team. That’s where he caught the management’s eyes and was rewarded with a backup role to Joe Burrow last offseason.

With Burrow out for the season, this might be the opportunity of a lifetime for Browning to prove himself. And he has started on a high note, receiving all the fire inside him at once. But will the instant relief turn into a success story in the end? For that, we have to wait till the end of the season. For now, securing a playoff spot remains his main goal, and may he succeed with that!
