Is Tua Tagovailoa really worth the massive extension, or are the Dolphins making a huge mistake?

You are paid in direct proportion to the difficulty of the problems you solve.” Elon Musk didn’t know that his words would prove monumental in the NFL, especially with quarterbacks. As the offense leader, they have been aptly named signal-callers for deciding the plays. For this reason, QBs are the highest earners in the league, with multi-million dollar contracts. Be it, Patrick Mahomes‘ 10-year deal with Kansas City Chiefs for $450 million, or Joe Burrow‘s 5-year contract with Cincinnati Bengals for $275 million. After four years of playing in the league, Tua Tagovailoa signed a four-year deal with the Miami Dolphins worth $212 million in July 2024.

However, this situation did not go well with former Dallas Cowboys DE Chris Canty. While talking on UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio on July 29, 2024, he attacked the Dolphins GM Chris Grier for signing the deal. DE called it an attempt to show that Tua is similar to Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and Justin Herbert. He said, “The GM did the deal to put him into the stratosphere with other athletes. But, in reality, we all know he ain’t got the game. He just doesn’t.” While we can argue that Tua has no trophies to show, he guided the team to the playoffs in 2022 and 2023.

He was their 5th draft pick in 2020. He had a dream 2023 season with 4.624 passing yards (the highest in the league). During the off-season talks, the franchise coach Mike McDaniel, the management, and the players including Tyreek Hill said on multiple occasions that they needed the QB. Ultimately, he extended the contract for 4 years worth $212.4 million, with a $53.1 million average annual salary. With $167 million guaranteed, he has become the highest-paid Dolphin athlete in NFL history. The contract has put a new life in him. And his excitement knows no bounds now.

On July 29, 2024, during the training camp, he greeted the fans with a big smile and said, “Show me the money!” He also acknowledged the pressure of being the most expensive player in the franchise. The QB said, “I’m the highest-paid employee in this office. I got to get my whatever together. I got to get that right and get our guys moving in the direction that we need to go to be able to do those things.” The QB is aiming big for the upcoming season.
