One game-winning FG wasn’t enough to keep Matthew Wright in the Kingdom. NFL insider Adam Schefter dropped the bombshell first—Wright is out, and Harrison Butker is back in action for the Chiefs’ Sunday’s clash against the Browns.

The news hit like a deep fade route, and Wright wasted no time confirming it himself on Instagram, where the vibe was more “saluting the moment” than a bitter farewell.

In his post, Wright kept it chill, sharing snapshots from his whirlwind Chiefs stint. Pics with HC Andy Reid, life around Kansas, and of course, that ice-in-his-veins 19-17 game-winning kick against the Chargers. He is some guy… not only because of when he was called up; he stepped up and proved. But also because he went out with a simple ‘Saluting face’ emoji caption.

It wasn’t just fans in the comments either—Chiefs teammates (now ex-teammates, in a blink of an eye), like Noah Gray, Spencer Schrader, Chris Oladokun, Tommy Townsend and Blake Grupe, showed their love by liking the post. Spencer even dropped a “Matty 🥶🥶🥶” in the comments, summing up the sentiment perfectly.

But hey, welcome to life in the NFL. One moment you’re the Special Teams Player of the Week, and the next, you’re packing up your locker. Wright’s 31-yard FG against the Chargers didn’t just secure a win; it locked in the Chiefs’ ninth consecutive AFC West title and their 15th straight victory.

Yet, here we are. Alas, in a league where rosters are as unpredictable as a last-minute Hail Mary, even that wasn’t enough. So, now, the onus is back on Harrison Butker… or is it?

What’s your perspective on:

Is the NFL too quick to discard players like Matthew Wright after a game-winning performance?

Have an interesting take?

Should Andy Reid gamble on Harrison Butker?

One does not take Andy Reid for a man rushing into making judgements. One SHOULD NOT! But if he plays Harrison Butker against the Browns, wouldn’t it be rushing him? I mean, the Chiefs have just activated the elite kicker from the IR after he was OUT since November 14, recovering from knee surgery.

And during that time, Reid saw that Spencer and Matt held it down, combining together 11-for-12 on field goals and nailed every extra point. Solid work. So, why rush the man with ice in his veins, even though he’s barely had time to knock off the rust in practice? Well, we can understand the urge.

Let’s talk numbers because, for Butker, they’re loud. He’s 18-of-20 on FGs this season, with a long of 53 yards, and he’s missed just one extra point. Over his career? A ridiculous 89.2% FG accuracy, 94.6% on PATs, and 752 points scored. Oh, and let’s not forget the 57-yarder he drilled in the Super Bowl.

When Dave Toub, the Chiefs’ Special Teams guru, said, “It’s going to be a little bit before [Butker] is 100%,” there was a hint of caution. But even if he’s not at full throttle yet, Chiefs Kingdom knows he’s the guy you want when the game’s on the line. But game’s not on the line. They have already punched their playoff ticket.

That’s the elephant in the room: it’s not a do-or-die. Replacements crushed it in Butker’s absence, proving Kansas City’s depth is no joke. So, here’s the question for you: Should the Browns game be the testing waters for Butker with the postseason in mind?
