Since long before the last season, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes have had a solid relationship. Kelce has a little edge in terms of  NFL experience over Mahomes, which has helped him share a telepathic bond with his QB, knowing where he will throw the ball without breaking a sweat.

Carolina Panthers veteran Tight End and broadcaster Greg Olsen had some thoughts about the Kelce-Mahomes duo he wanted to share on The Rich Eisen Show. Eisen tried to crack the code between the 3x-Super Bowl-winning QB and his tight end Kelce and Olsen had a lot to say about it since he played with the great Cam Newton in his time in the league.

“The reason that I appreciate it so much is because of the style in which they play was like a style that, again I’m not saying I was Kelce and me and Cam but like, that was Cam and I kind of style where you couldn’t really draw a line on a piece of paper, the route might look a little different each time, you know Kelce will run it at 8 yards, 9 yards, 12 yards and if you asked him, like ‘Hey why’d you run your route like that?’ He’d be like ‘That’s how I could get open. I just run where the defense is not and Pat trusts me and throws me the ball’,” said Olsen.

“That relationship, you can’t coach. You can’t have all your tight ends run their routes like that,” the broadcaster iterates. He believes that when a duo shares a close understanding like Kelce and Mahomes do, they see the game in a shared view, without often surprising each other with their moves. “That comes with experience,” Olsen adds.

And there are reasons why Mahomes-Kelce is one of the best QB-TE duos in the league. Their last post-season performance is worthy of praise.

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes: Breaking multiple records

In the last postseason, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes broke Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski’s record for most postseason touchdowns. Brady and Gronk played 11 seasons together, went to 22 playoff games, and had 15 touchdowns together. Mahomes and Kelce one-upped them in the last season where they amassed 16 touchdowns. It’s worth noting that it took 4 fewer seasons for the Chiefs duo to outscore the Patriots legends.

Another noteworthy thing is that Kelce now holds the record for most post-season receptions in league history (152), thanks to Patrick Mahomes, who also set a record for most post-season wins by a QB in his first seven seasons. Also, the Chiefs won 4 AFC Championships in the last 5 years and the credit goes to this dynamic duo. In the process, Kelce broke Jerry Rice’s playoff reception record in the last season.

Last year, Mahomes touched upon the chemistry in his own words. “I don’t know why, I just kind of understand what [Kelce] is going to do – some stuff that he isn’t supposed to do,” Mahomes explained. “He has a good understanding of the whole entire concept, he understands the coverages, takes a lot of reps, and I just try to develop that trust that wherever I see it one way, he is going to do it that way.

In the 2021 season divisional game against the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs were about to lose with just 13 seconds left on the clock. By some miracle and calculated play calling, Mahomes knew what he had to do- pass the ball to Travis Kelce, who got the down and put the Chiefs in the field goal range. Harrison Butker finished the job and tied the game. The skirmish went to overtime and the Bills lost that game 36-42.

Now Kelce has more of a reason to play harder because he just became the richest TE in the league with a 2-year $34.3 million deal. Also, last season, the Chiefs struggled with a WR roster but they rectified it this year and they have Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, Marquise Brown, and Kadarius Toney to handle business this year. Worthy stands out because he has Tyreek’s speed, but his skills need a bit of finesse. Other than that, the Chiefs are good to go to break some more records this year.
