Jared Goff‘s Detroit Lions are locked in to rock the upcoming season with a strong offense and a focus on defense, looking ahead to the 2025 NFL Draft. However, before the draft, GM Brad Holmes needs to resolve issues related to one player’s contract and his place on the roster. This wide receiver is just 24 years old, but the road ahead won’t be easy for him with the Detroit Lions.
The player we are talking about is Jameson Williams. But before we dive into his contract details, Brad Holmes sent a strong message to Williams. During a conversation with Mike Florio on NFL on NBC, Holmes discussed earning trust, and the host immediately picked up Williams’ topic. He asked what Jameson Williams needs to do to earn that trust.
Brad Holmes said, “He needs to build upon what he’s already done and where he’s gotten to since we picked him. We knew that, obviously, he was going to have the injury, but we also knew there would be a lot of development and growth that he would need to do, and he did that.” After this, the GM added more.

Holmes also said, “We’re extremely pleased with the growth he’s shown. And I think it’s clear that he can run, catch, and make big plays. But a lot of maturity and work behind the scenes is needed to make that happen. Like you mentioned, the trust built with Jared – all of that, he put the time in to do. He just needs to continue to build on that because I do think there’s more left in him, and he’s one of those guys who is an incredible weapon anytime the ball’s in his hands.” Jameson suffered an ankle sprain in the first week of the 2024 season, but he performed well after that, making a case for a contract extension.
But the most important thing for any franchise is to avoid players who are legally controversial off the field. To elaborate, think about a player who was suspended for both a performance-enhancing drug case and gambling—that’s Jameson Williams. Therefore, Brad was talking about the ‘behind the scenes’ trust.
Now, while his off-field issues are on the table, let’s talk about his contract. The Lions have dropped another important update on Jameson Williams. Let’s discuss the details.

Jared Goff’s teammate to be blessed with the 5th Year option
Jameson Williams is currently under a four-year, $17,461,790 contract signed in 2022, with an annual salary of $4,365,448. However, as he is entering the final year of that contract, there are questions about his future with the team. Brad Holmes clarified that in the annual meeting as well. According to the GM, Jared Goff’s wide receiver will “most likely” get his 5th-year option triggered.

Speaking about Williams’s 5th-year option, Brad Holmes said, “Look, it’s heading that way that we are most likely going to do that. He was a tremendous player for us last year. He’s still scratching the surface. I do think he’s got more in him as well. So I just think it makes sense for us to do what we can to keep him around.” Yeah, there’s more juice left in that wide receiver.

Looking at Jameson Williams’ stats from last year, he made 58 receptions on 91 receiving targets. Additionally, he scored seven receiving touchdowns and covered 1,001 yards. His last two seasons were decent, though he only played a total of 18 games over two years. Until the 2024 season, Williams’s total TD score was just three. But as mentioned earlier, he now has 10 in total, with seven in the last season. That shows a player on the rise!
Having a great season should be accompanied by great trust from quarterbacks like Jared Goff and GMs like Brad Holmes. Now that it’s expected that Williams will have the 5th-year option, let’s see how he earns trust and respect both on and off the field.
