Is Daniel Jones the right choice, or are the Giants just delaying the inevitable QB change?

Taking on the Steelers on Monday night, the Giants had their QB Daniel Jones participate in all the first-team reps this week. Although there were concerns that Jones would be replaced coming into Pittsburgh, it may not happen as his backup QB Drew Lock didn’t impress either. While Jones was called to the bench in last week’s loss to the Eagles, Lock gathered only 3-of-8 passes for 6 yards.

And those aren’t the numbers that Brian Daboll could be looking for from Jones’ possible replacement. Even the players aren’t willing to see Jones replaced, as some of them spoke about a different scenario. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, who covers the New York Giants, said, “he asked some players in the locker room and they weren’t pushing for a change at QB. Jones is their starter. A few guys said it might be different if Tyrod Taylor was still on the roster. He’s not. It’s still Daniel Jones’ team.”

Taylor had a good time last season filling in for Jones when he had two injuries disrupting his time on the field. After missing games from week 3 to 5 for a neck injury, Jones suffered an ACL that ended his season in week 9. Well, it was time for Taylor to step up, and he did for five games last season.

Leading the team in Jones’ absence, he had a 2-3 record while passing for 1,341 yards and adding five TDs to his name. However, it may not have been enough to re-sign Taylor, who eventually became a free agent. And after testing the market, Tyrod joined the Jets for a two-year deal in the green half of New York.

Replacing Taylor, the Giants went ahead and signed Drew Lock for a one-year deal worth $5 million. But he hasn’t really impressed as the players were not willing to see him take Jones’ place in the center. Talking about Jones, he hasn’t been productive either, considering the expectations the Giants fans had from him building up to the season.

Daniel Jones’ woes continue in New York

Is Daniel Jones the right choice, or are the Giants just delaying the inevitable QB change?

Have an interesting take?

Going back to the Giants’ last game against the Eagles, which ended in an embarrassing 3-28 loss, showed the lack of flair Jones has on himself. After throwing for 99 yards with no TDs and no interceptions, Jones was called to the bench within the fourth quarter. Although those numbers aren’t expected of a 5-year veteran QB, he finished his game eating up seven sacks in New York.

Amid his continued failure to lead the Giants offense, they currently find themselves 31st in scoring offense. While only averaging 14.1 points every game. Since the rumors of him getting dropped ahead of the Steelers clash, Jones responded by saying, “I’m just going to focus on playing well. I think playing well winning the game. That puts us all in the best position. Daboll can make his decision. He’s the head coach, so my job is to play and play well, and that’s what I’m focused on.”

But Jones cannot say he hasn’t had the chances in New York as he entered his sixth season as their designed starter. Well, he was also handed a $160 million contract for 4-years after leading the Giants to a playoff spot in 2022. Will Jones be able to turn around his fortunes in New York as the weeks go by thick and fast? Well, if he doesn’t, then the Giants wouldn’t think twice before cutting him from the roster, citing his $41.5 million cap hit next season.
