Better late than ever would be the words spoken in every G-Men’s mouth as they finally decided to make a much-needed change at center. Although Brian Daboll himself is fighting for his job, choosing to bench Daniel Jones could be his way of saving his position. As the Giants prepare to face the Bucs after the bye week, Daboll has gone ahead and sacked Jones to the bench.
His replacement is Tommy DeVito, who was signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent last season. Announcing his decision to the media, Daboll expressed, “We are making a quarterback switch from Daniel Jones to Tommy DeVito. After evaluating and watching a lot of tape, that’s the reason we are going with Tommy. Drew Lock will be the backup. This was a necessary move for us and I’m looking forward to working with Tommy.” Well, DeVito is no stranger to the starting position.

When Jones and then-backup Tyrod Taylor were injured last season. DeVito was handed the keys for six games until Jones came back. And he ended up leading the Giants to three straight victories. Finishing with a record of 3-3 as a starter, DeVito also racked in 3 more appearances as a rookie. He ended up completing 114-of-178 passes for 1,101 yards with eight TDs and just three interceptions. Well, it seems like those ‘tapes’ were enough for him to move ahead of Drew Lock.
Lock, who was just signed in the summer for a one-year $5M contract, has incentives up to $3M. His shaky performances weren’t enough for Daboll to risk paying him $3M. Going back to the Giants’ week 7 loss against the Eagles, Lock completed just 3-of-8 passes for 6 yards. He even recorded 2 fumbles in a 28-3 drubbing that didn’t do him any justice whatsoever.
However, the Giants’ decision to bench their signal-caller may well be a financial one. Even after their GM, Joe Schoen, reiterated that his contract wouldn’t come in the way of footballing reasons.

Giants on their way to save pennies after Daniel Jones’ decision
What’s your perspective on:
Is benching Daniel Jones a desperate move by Daboll, or a smart play for the Giants' future?
Have an interesting take?
When Jones was handed the $160 million extension last year, the Giants were hopeful he could repay the trust bestowed on him. However, in his second year of that lucrative contract, Jones is nowhere near the expectations of G-Men.
After getting drafted in 2019, Jones had a tremendous rookie year. This saw him record more than 3,000 yards with 24 TDs. As we fast forward to his current and maybe his final season with the Giants, Jones has been nothing but awful.

Over the past two seasons, Jones has a starting record of 3-13 with just 10 TDs and 13 interceptions. Well, his past five games this season shows the lack of flair Jones brings into the offense. Throwing just two TDs and four interceptions, the Giants are dead-last in scoring points. They are 32nd with just 15.6 points per game. Choosing to cut Jones from their roster would mean the Giants take a $22M dead cap hit.
But the real question is whether benching their 6-year starter really does any wonders for their season. It comes down to Daboll and DeVito now as they try to salvage the Giants’ face, starting with the Bucs on Sunday.
