How about that! The New York Giants went from not enough quarterbacks to just too many in a short time. Surely because while everyone was playing NFL strategies, John Mara played chess, thinking two steps ahead of others. Although the Giants already have the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, where the team could possibly welcome another QB in Shedeur Sanders, their 53-man roster is already looking upwards. Here’s how-

  • In November 2024, the Giants said goodbye to Daniel Jones and replaced Tommy DeVito for him to end the season as QB1.
  • In March 2025, before DeVito could leave for free agency, they re-signed him to a $1.03 million/ 1 year contract. And then they stacked their QB room.
  • Last week, the Giants brought in two big guns into the Big Apple– Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston– filling up their QR room to the brim.

But the kick is, with these Pro Bowlers and experienced veterans, Hara just might have doubled Giants’ money’s worth as Nick Wright puts it.

During an episode of First Things First, Wright clarified, “The price of these two players is so cheap. And we talk about the value of quarterbacks in the trade market that I think in a world where Daniel Jones cost $14 million for one year, having Jameis and Russ under your control, contractually, for a total of $14 million for next year.”

Words have made rounds this off-season that teams are not extending good-looking contracts to the quarterbacks as they used to. And with the Giants’ latest move with Russ and Jameis, the point is proven again although it contrasts hugely when compared to what Jones brought for himself.

You see, in a surprising move, Hara first signed Wilson to a one-year, $10.5 million deal. This is what the 10x Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion is getting after he had been in the market for way too long considering his resume. Then just a couple of days ago, the Giants brought in Jameis with a two-year, $8 million deal. Although not the best target this season, Winston does bring in his decade-long experience to New York.

Still, it was Jones, who himself agreed he did not play as hard and as consistent as the NFL demands last season, received a $14 million/ 1 year deal with the Indianapolis Colts. And on top of that, Russ and Winston’s roles in the team might not even be as long-term.

“Even if you draft a quarterback, that just means, ‘You know what, Jameis or Russ is an insurance policy and maybe, in training camp someone gets hurt and we can flip one of them for a fifth-round pick.’ The point I am making is not that– It is as likely today as it was yesterday the Giants are into Shedeur, but I don’t think we should slam the door shut on it. But it is interesting that they went with two veterans,” Wright added.

It’s pretty clear, this can be a low-cost, high-return situation, and the Giants definitely played it clever with future plans for the organization. On the other hand, Daniel Jones surprisingly hit a lottery with the Colts because he is arguably not as great as someone like a Super Bowl champ of Russell Wilson’s caliber or even Jameis Winston in terms of experience. So, did the Colts make the best decision considering they already have Anthony Richardson who will compete with Jones for the QB1 spot? Rob Gronkoswki has a thought.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Giants outsmart the Colts by signing two veterans for the price of one Daniel Jones?

Have an interesting take?

On Dudes on Dudes podcast, he did not say it was a complete mistake but still was critical of the move considering Indiana did bring Daniel in as a backup. “They overpaid a little bit at this position….It’s going to be a QB battle in IndyIf Daniel Jones does beat out Richardson, then it’s a fair deal, but if they brought him in to be a backup, I think a $5 to $6 to $7 million deal would have been more efficient.”

Time will tell if the Colts’s contractual decision was profitable or not for Jones. As far as the Giants are concerned, one thing is certain: Something is cooking in John Mara’s head and the front office for their QB room. Who knows, they might have some plans for Russ and Jameis.

The Giants don’t want Shedeur Sanders after Russell Wilson?

After waiting on Aaron Rodgers for an answer for too long, one of the biggest news New York could have dropped was Russell Wilson’s signing. And why not? He was the next best quarterback present in the trade market after Rodgers. But now, many are wondering will the Giants lock in one of the top QB prospects – Shedeur Sander?

Answering it, Nick Wright expressed, “I’m not sure this (signing Russ and Jameis) indicates that they don’t like him or they actually think so highly of him. And by that, I mean, to me, when I saw this news, I was like ‘Okay, this means one of two things which are very different evaluations of Shedeur. One is, he’s not worth the third pick and we’re not taking him. The other one is, he’s not gonna be there at three and Cleveland’s taking him. I do agree with you that this decision means they do not expect to be able to or to want to draft Shedeur.”

“I don’t think it eliminates the possibility… Jameis’ contract is cheap enough that if they think, ‘Oh man, we didn’t think Sheduer was gonna be there, so we’re taking him.’ They could either cut Jameis or the other reason that I would advocate for this process, even if they still think, ‘We might draft Shedeur at three’, the price of these two players is so cheap,” he further added.

Weight’s words also echo what former Giants player Isaiah Stanback said a few days ago“(Russell Wilson) is here because they didn’t get the guy that they really want. 14 Million for two veteran quarterbacks who have playoff experience and a Super Bowl? That’s not bad to have as a backup… And I think that if they’re in position to get a quarterback in the draft, they’re still going to take it.”

So again, neither Russell Wilson nor Jameis Winston is the long-term answer for the NY team. That answer could be the rookie drafted this year. Even Chris Broussard shared his take on the situation, but he feels the Giants are not locked in on Sanders. “I don’t think Shedeur is going to be a Giant. Why in the world would you bring in two veterans if you wanted Shedeur?….What this tells me is they aren’t in love with Shedeur, like they may like him, but I think they like some other quarterbacks” like Jaxon Dart.

But they are surely considering both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston as bridges to a potentially smoother future for the franchise. It will be an interesting weather in the Giants locker room as we discover just what is brewing in their front office right now.
