Superstar status can give you an entry ticket into a franchise but can’t guarantee you a permanent spot. Russell Wilson saw it firsthand with the Broncos in 2023. He wasn’t performing up to the expectations. Then came a clear warning: either you cut down on the $37 million injury guarantee or be ready to sit on the bench. He refused, and they traded him off to the Steelers. It’s the same story with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
For the first time in the 2024 season, Giants head coach Brian Daboll didn’t say a clear ‘yes’ when asked about his starting quarterback. His answer, “We’re going to spend a lot of time here watching our tape and evaluating things,” raised eyebrows. The 17-20 overtime loss against the Panthers has shaken their confidence big time.

Daniel Jones could also face a similar situation as Russell Wilson. He also has a $23 million injury guarantee in 2025. So, they wouldn’t want to pay such a huge amount of money for the failure. The conditions are the same. It’s a bye week. The team is at the bottom of the NFC East with 2 wins and 8 losses. The playoff race is almost over. Only the fight for reputation needs to be fought.
Even the quarterback needs to play for a different side now. 6 years in, he hasn’t had any success. That’s a huge period. If he plays the entire 2024 season, he might break his worst record. Since 2019, his worst season record has been 3-9 in 12 games in 2019 and 1-5 in 6 games in 2023. Fans wouldn’t want him to see him in such an embarrassing situation.
The only option is to move forward and be hopeful of better things.

Daniel Jones frustrated after overtime loss
In 10 games this season, he has 216 of 341 passes (63.3% completion rate) in 2,070 yards with 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Against the Panthers in Munich, Germany, the quarterback’s performance wasn’t very inspiring. With 22 of 37 passes (60% completion) in 190 yards with no touchdown and 2 interceptions, he let his team down. The team lost in the overtime.
After the loss, Daniel Jones was shocked and said, “It’s very frustrating. Came up short, obviously hurt ourselves a lot.” He has been given enough chances to prove himself. As the leader of the locker room, he had the freedom to do everything he wanted in 10 games.

The team is looking forward to checking the alternatives in the bye week. Tommy DeVito played 6 games for them last season and had a 3-3 record as a rookie. Drew Lock has previously seen the culture and strategies of the Broncos and Seahawks, but at the Giants, he has been a backup. Has the time come to check the backup QB?
Whatever may be the decision, it has to be quick. The season is halfway over. The Giants have to do something extraordinary if they want a respectable finish.
