The quarterback drama spread across the league like a flu. The Mirror stated that 7 teams will have new QBs going into the 2025 season. One of those teams that was uncertain of their play caller situation was the New York Giants. The team started their centennial year in 2024, knowing that they would possibly not have any of their three QBs with them by the offseason. And they didn’t.

Their QBs– Tim Boyle, Tommy DeVito, and Drew Lock– were all set to enter free agency in search of a new home after the team’s disappointing season. Anything but celebratory 100! Looking for other choices, Brian Daboll had two logical choices: Target a veteran in free agency to make quick snaps in 2025 and go for a young talent in the drafts for future growth. But they have given us all a twister with their latest update.

Drumrolls, please!

The Giants officially have their lone quarterback for the 2025 season and it’s none other than Tommy DeVito, who played for them the previous season. For the time being, the only information available concerning the contract is that it is an Exclusive Rights Free Agent (ERFA) tender. It is just for the upcoming season and is valued at $1.03 million.

ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the news on his X account: “Giants now have officially re-signed quarterback Tommy DeVito, who for now is the only quarterback that the team has under contract.” NY’s move proves that they continue to put their faith in their 2023 undrafted pick who did some wonders for them in his rookie season itself. And that will be his personal benchmark entering a new season with the team.

The New Jersey native has started 8 games for the team since 2023, with six of them coming in the rookie year itself as he substituted for injury-ridden Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. Then, he became the first undrafted rookie since 1970 with three consecutive wins with a passer rating higher than 100. He also threw for more than 1,000 yards and combined eight touchdowns. Moreover, during Week 14, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week as well as Rookie of the Week.

His other starts came last season when Daboll first benched and later waived Jones before the 26-year-old himself got injured. He wrapped up 2024 with 31 of 44 passes for 257 yards in two starts in three games total. DeVito so far owns a 3-5 career record. In 12 career games since 2023, he has completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,358 yards and 8 TDs and 3 interceptions. Entering the next season, we can expect similar numbers if he wishes to reciprocate the trust that the team has shown in him. But of course, there is a condition.

Over 66% of DeVito’s games for the Giants where he has shown some promise has been his starts. Hence, one thing that will affect his production is whether he gets to be the primary QB or not. For now, Daboll is hawking the free agency for a veteran and the Draft for a newbie. However, amidst these choices, Tommy’s agent has shown belief in the local hero before he was re-signed.

Promising that he can be a starter in the league, he told Front Office Sports two days ago, “He’s locked in the lab. He’s working 5-6 days a week. Feels comfortable. I thought he showed growth on two starts, didn’t turn the ball over. You know, 31 for 44. Went up against two playoff teams. I think if he’s healthy and he gets protection, Tommy can start in the National Football League and be successful.”

It is quite a vision that the Giants have planned for their 101st year. The mindset of starting again on a brighter note is certainly visible as they have made some more moves on other positions before the free agency hits in a couple of days. For the time being, there are various rumors concerning the Giants’ starting quarterback position, with a couple of names still available to sign with the team.

Will Sam Darnold and Justin Field still sign with the Giants?

Well, Tommy DeVito’s signing has impacted a lot of things within the NFL. Till now, the reports were that the Giants could sign either Sam Darnold or Justin Fields. Both QBs are of the highest caliber and capable of leading teams to glory. However, the things are getting trickier for New York. The Pitts are showing high interest in re-signing Fields but they are unlikely to do that before Monday (12 pm ET) when the legal tampering period opens. However, it takes two to tango and Justin is not interested.

According to Dianna Russini, Senior NFL Insider for The Athletic, Steelers QB Justin Fields is expected to test free agency. There, he has interests from the Jets and the Giants, the Big Apple being a clear denominator here. As for Sam, he too is also not returning to the Twin City.

Ian Rapoport, National Insider for the NFL Network, tweeted last night, Headlines from Saturday: — QB Sam Darnold not expected to re-sign with the #Vikings” Hence, all hope is gone for the Vikes.

But this is where the Giants can swoop in for a huge steal. The team already has a backup quarterback. Hence, they can plan to bring in only one of the best seasoned quarterbacks to lead them. They can even take risks by signing some big names who did not have a great previous season. Which BTW, they are already trying to do.

According to reports from NFL expert Daniel Jeremiah, the team may consider signing Aaron Rodgers for their QB1 spot. Other massive stars like Jamie Winston and Marcus Mariota are also currently in the list of the QBs that the team can sign.

The squad from here can also take some risks by signing a rookie quarterback like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders. If they fail, Tommy DeVito will be there to cover up for the team. At this point, literally anything is possible, and it will be fascinating to observe how things develop.
